Daddyfink Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 Can you post some pics of the the engine, interior and chassis of the Mach1? I'm not sure if the parts I have are correct. Here is the pic of the parts, sorry for the brightness, but this plastic is super shiny!
Ace-Garageguy Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 Very interesting. I didn't realize the showcar was ever kitted, and I see a few minor proportion and line discrepancies from the real one. Potential to make a very special model of one of my favorite concept vehicles.
vamach1 Posted April 4, 2017 Author Posted April 4, 2017 (edited) Thanks for posting the pictures Daddyfink. Edited April 4, 2017 by vamach1 typo
Rob Hall Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 Neat kit...never seen one in person. Love the wheels (were those ever used in another kit) ?
vamach1 Posted April 12, 2017 Author Posted April 12, 2017 Got some primer on the body. Next step is to test fit the AMT modified chassis and adjust as necessary.
vamach1 Posted April 13, 2017 Author Posted April 13, 2017 (edited) Ready for sanding and polishing. Duplicolor 2009 Ford Edge Redfire pearl metallic. Edited April 13, 2017 by vamach1 www
vamach1 Posted April 14, 2017 Author Posted April 14, 2017 Test fitting tires - may have to go with something lower profile.
Can-Con Posted April 14, 2017 Posted April 14, 2017 (edited) I think the Iron Horse version was the same kit, just changed a bit and recycled to get another use out of a tool. I seem to remember someone saying that a while back. It would be nice to see it returned to original and reissued if the tool is still around. They are. There's also a third one called the "Autolite Special". The Mach 1 came out in '68. You can tell by the artwork. It's similar to most of the other AMT kit artwork that year. Best kit box art ever, IMHO. Here's the box of my '68 Thunderbird for comparison. Edited April 14, 2017 by Can-Con
Ron Hamilton Posted April 15, 2017 Posted April 15, 2017 I just picked up an "Iron Horse" Mustang kit today. Seeing your build on line and in person is definitely an inspiration.
Ralph Henderson Posted January 6, 2020 Posted January 6, 2020 So Rex, did you ever finish this? How did the later chassis work out?
streetmachine11 Posted January 6, 2020 Posted January 6, 2020 I've got the iron horse version I want to make the stock mach 1 since those are big bucks. but haven had any luck locating a set of correct wheels. such a cool looking car

DukeE Posted January 6, 2020 Posted January 6, 2020 Original issue only MC kits. Someone makes them in resin, sorry I can't recall caster. Link to another thread in this thread. Great kit of cool car. Have all but the molded in yellow Superstang.
Ralph Henderson Posted January 6, 2020 Posted January 6, 2020 Heck, I just noticed this thread was 2.5 years old. Didn't mean to bring up a relic, but I just acquired a 1st ed Mach 1, and am trying to find out everything I can about them. I musta built a half dozen of these when they were new, in the various releases. Now, since I found one I could afford, Round 2 will repop 'em with all the parts in an original art box.. You can thank me later.. lol
vamach1 Posted January 6, 2020 Author Posted January 6, 2020 Thanks for the reminder. I posted pictures Under Glass but not in this thread. So here is the finished project with another one I found at a model swap meet and the box I bought off Ebay. For the completed one I used the 68 Shelby big block since after all it is a Mach1 one. Since I do not have the original instruction sheet I'm guessing it came with the 260/289 engine from the 66 Mustang and that's the engine that is in the unpainted built up one pictured.
Ralph Henderson Posted January 6, 2020 Posted January 6, 2020 Nicely done! No drama with the later chassis??

I ended up using the "66" Mustang chassis which you can see in the next to last picture that is the same as in the original Mach1 kit. I do not remember if the 68 Shelby Mustang kit chassis would work also but I'm sure with a few mods it would fit easily.
Ralph Henderson Posted January 6, 2020 Posted January 6, 2020 cool! Always liked the lines on that car..
Bills72sj Posted January 7, 2020 Posted January 7, 2020 Here is a link to a body on ebay (i'm not selling it) https://www.ebay.com/itm/AMT-1968-FORD-MUSTANG-MACH-1-ORIGINAL-ISSUE-2148-200-MPC-68-USED-BODY-ONLY/114011335167?hash=item1a8b9ae9ff:g:Q9wAAOSwoFxd8cA~

The seller lists other parts from that kit which all together would add up to about $200 or more. If that is the competition I should have no problem selling the extra one I have for $100.

I just picked up a nice rebuilder for 15 bucks. missing a few parts, but nothing I can't find 'er fudge. A stripped body for 50 does sound a bit high, eh? I don't mind a guy making a buck or two, but it would be cool to keep real vintage stuff or good rebuilders together. 99% of the time they will sell for what they should sell for That's been my experience, anyway. On the other hand, it is nice to be able to pick up the oddball 40-50 year old part, without having to buy a 200 dollar kit..
Greg Myers Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 Wouldn't it be nice if Round II saw it in their heart to reissue these kits in one box, Sort of like a Three in one? With all of the missing parts to make any of the different versions that have been issued from this kit through the years. 1
