Had this same sort of thing happen on another forum recently when a member referred to BMF as "Junk".

Come on guys, have you ever heard of being tactful?

Has it advanced the discussion at all to start using that kind of language?

No, it hasn't.

Is there something wrong with, "I don't care for it" or even "I hate it"?

Just a little bit of prudence can go a long way towards keeping the discussion from turning into a conflict & inevitably getting shut down by the moderators.

On this board, it leads to an argument. In most cases it comes across as antagonistic, whether intended or not. Doesn't matter what we are talking about. Why not just say you do not like it and explain why or provide an alternative choice and explain how it is better.

In this case, if you go back and read from the beginning, the thread started downhill as soon as the putty was called junk. Up to that point it was pretty much unanimous that this stuff is good for small fills and to be avoided for larger work. There was no absolute praise for the product, just a use with caution attitude.

Well said Michael.....  and I do appreciate everyones input,  it was pretty much said  it has its limitations and used appropriately it doesn't hurt to have it around.....  is what I got out of it.     and some think it's junk...;)

So calling an inferior product "junk" is now a triggering mechanism on this forum.

Got it.

Calling something "junk" or "garbage" without particular elaboration as to WHY it's being called names is as useful as saying it's goo goo gaa gaa poo poo doo doo.

One would hope we are all capable of imparting more adult and worthwhile information.

Citing specific personal first-hand experience goes a long way in that direction.

Your assessment that a particular product is "inferior" is pure opinion, and even that term would be more agreeable than using the term "junk" or "garbage".

I feel like we should all express our opinions on a forum like this, but there is absolutely no justification for diminishing any thing that another member may find useful by "calling names".

I don't think any of us here are 9 years old anymore.

Surely we can be a bit more judicious.

It all boils down to what your mother taught you.

"If you can't say something nice, say nothing at all".

We don't need to hold our opinions back, we should just be a bit more prudent if we want to keep these subjects from spiraling into an altercation & having yet another useful, informative thread shut down.

I have to agree, that Squadron Putty is pretty much junk , and there are much better options , for one part's , I like to use Tamiya Putties and Bondo Glazing Putty.

I've never considered it garbage, I just can't afford hardly any of it!

For those enjoying the entertainment from the sidelines, Jiffy Pop is junk. Orville Redenbacher is much better.

As long as there is plenty of butter, that's all I care about.

And plenty of Coke, because Pepsi is Junk

Snake, who knows ... maybe Jonathan's was a s well! :D:D Sometimes I'm not that good at "reading between the lines".

I say what I mean ;), and it is my opinion that it is not a very good putty, and there are much better options , I think the only other putty that is worse would be that garbage Testors calls putty.

Very good Jonathan!

Oops, kind of went off the rails a little at the end! ;)

I am a little confused Steve,  its ok for people here to call Chinese made products junk, but then people get upset over calling Squadron Putty or Testor's putty junk:unsure:,  nice double standard eh.

A double standard here!?! Why perish the thought!! And yes, I am being extremely sarcastic in this comment due to my experiences here over the years. But some snowflakes get their noses out of joint when confronted with a differing opinion or fact & get coddled, no matter their own antics.

I don't know anything about what "other people" say Jonathan.

I don't believe "I" have ever called anything junk.

You can call it what you want, I just think that it just diminishes your argument.

At least it does in my eyes.

Why would you get upset over someone referring to a product as "junk" or "garbage" unless you were the manufacturer of said product or had some other type of vested interest in it? That simply makes no sense to me. It's an opinion, nothing more, and Mr. Turner is certainly entitled to express it.

Perhaps I didn't include the required amount of rainbows, butterflies, unicorns & puppy dog kisses in my comments........., but as that seems to vary from one poster to the next, since there is such bias here, I'm not sure what the required minimum is.

I agree Squadron in both colors are great for scratches, and minor filling of tiny holes but I found Tamiya  GRAY to be the best for this and the best non catalyzed putty I've used.

I know Tamiya makes another putty in white but never tried it.

I agree also that the Testors isn't too great but I've gotten it to work on a few occasions when I ran out of the Tamiya.I would squeeze it out of the tube and give is a quick stirring with a razor blade,or exacto blade before applying it since it  tends to seperate in the tube (and it dries VERY fast too).

I've found also that using thick CA glue ,or even melting sprue works better in many cases over using putty.

I guess what I should say is use whatever  works best for YOU.If you like Squadron and it works for you,hey stick with it. =)

I believe that this is the type of "helpful" information that Dave, the OP was looking for.

Thank you Lou!

All putties and fillers are junk!  I only use kit parts filed to perfection. No gaps or sinkholes in my models! ;)

So...you've never built the MPC '67 GTO, then?
