abedooley Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Once again I was digging through some ol' stuff thats been layin around for years and I picked up one of those emergency blankets and noticed how extremely thin and chrome-like it is. I was wondering if anyone has ever thought about using this for chrome foil. This stuff is really flexible. The package says its made of aluminum laminated polyethylene. If it could work, I dont know if I could do it, but I figured that if I put it out there someone could have an idea if this stuff is any good or just another hopeful junk find. Here's a pic to show how much of this stuff comes in a package. Here's a closeup to show how reflective this stuff is. I know that BMF is not relatively expensive, but I just like to find free stuff and figured that if this stuff is any good it would be awesome.
Guest Davkin Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Well, try on a scrap body and report back to us. I personally don't use BMF, I prefer aluminun duct repair tape. David
abedooley Posted June 18, 2008 Author Posted June 18, 2008 I think I'm just gonna skip this idea and go with Krylon's Silver Leafing pen instead. I dont think the glue would even stick to the other stuff, or it might even melt it. I'm just gonna delete this post.

I think it's worth a try, that foil seems to be very close to chrome. You can find some tips about adhesives here: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=7139
abedooley Posted June 18, 2008 Author Posted June 18, 2008 I went out and bought some Rub 'N' Buff and I like the way it looks for petina. I also bought Krylon's Silver Leafing Pen and that stuff is awesome. Not as nice as BMF, but ###### close!!! As soon as I get to actually using it I'll post some pics on here.

And if you hold it up to a light you can see through it. I can try it on something, but I dont think I'll get good results either way seeins how I've never used any kinda foil.

I see... that might be a problem then. One of the essential properties of BMF (and other thin aluminum foils) is that they are pretty flexible, and you can stretch it a bit to conform to the surface. I suspect that a plastic foil won't do that, it will probably wrinkle up and make a big mess. Still: If you have the blanket, why not try it?
abedooley Posted June 19, 2008 Author Posted June 19, 2008 (edited) I'm gonna start stripping my other challenger body today for a test subject. Here's the steering wheel with krylon's silver leaving pen. Edited June 25, 2008 by abedooley
