Dave Ambrose
I'll be taking the forums offline for maintenance, Thursday night, 8 PM PDT. They'll probably be offline for 2.5 to 3 hours, maybe less. Thanks for being patient,Dave Ambrose

MrObsessive
8:00 PM on a weekday night I'm well into snoozeland! Gotta get up early to be at work by 4:30 AM, but I do check the board while I'm eating something before work. Hopefully the maintenance cures the slowness of the board. I like to look at certain topics that interest me, but when the board is slow to load pages, I just close things out and try to catch up with it later. Time is too much of a premium for me in the morning!
Lovefordgalaxie
Well that will give us all an excuse to hit the workbench . Or to actually work, like paying the bills work. This forum is sabotaging my income, LOL!

peter31a
Thanks for doing this Dave. Glad you are out there trying to make sure the board (or mechanics thereof) works properly. Hoping it will perk things up. Because when I count to 1030 (as 1001, 1002, 1003 etc) and a topic still hasn't come up I leave the site and come back with fingers crossed later. Dave Ambrose
My first goal is to get the board running faster. But, before we can do anything, we have to be able to back up the files. This board is huge. The files (including pictures) are 57 GB. The database is a good deal smaller, but still big. That will be Thursday night's task. The source button is on my list, but further down the road. High octane
Hmmm, I'll be watching TV, however I sometimes work on my models while watching TV also. Thanks for the "heads up."

This board is huge. The files (including pictures) are 57 GB. The database is a good deal smaller, but still big. That will be Thursday night's task. I have been involved with computers since the early '80s We used 300MB washing-machine-size CDC hard drives for the CAD/CAM systems we were making. Had my first personal PC in the early '90s. I bought 130MB hard drive for it and I thought that I would never fill it up. Now I work with iSCSI storage arrays which have *HUGE* capacities. 57GB seemed huge just few years back, but now you can pick up a 3.5" 8TB hard drive for less than $250. Compared to that single 3.5" 8TB drive, 57GB seems insignificant. But I also understand that it is still a pain to manage a forum like this and make backups, etc. Thanks for your efforts! I started with computers in the '70s. We were thrilled to have those drives, and now getting a USB drive that size is considered an insult. I have many terabytes of storage on my home network. Those big drives get much less useful when connected by a too-skinny wire. This is an incredibly large forum system by almost any standard. Certainly in the 90th percentile size-wise. Mostly, it's getting the right structure in place. This server hosts multiple web sites, and it makes many things more complicated. I want to make sure we don't lose any data during this upgrade. That would be a first-magnitude disaster. We've already lost our gallery, and I'll be reinitializing that once we get the forum software up to current rev. Ace-Garageguy
Good luck. I know these things are sometimes as much art as they are science, so here's hoping that everything goes smoothly, and to plan. I will certainly NOT criticize if any glitches remain, as I also understand the frustratingly unpredictable things that can go awry. Fingers crossed, positive vibes being sent out into the ether. Xingu
Maybe he did something with it already, my pages are loading quicker than they have in months. Edited September 28, 2017 by Xingu
Dave Ambrose
Maybe he did something with it already, my pages are loading quicker than they have in months.I did defragment some of the database tables. There was an important one that was especially bad. The web hosting company used to do that automatically every night, now they don't.
