crazyjim Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 Marcia wants to take a trip to Sedona AZ in May 2018. We'd like to do the south rim and red rock. Would like to do a day trip to Jerome maybe another trip to Surprise. Any recommendations from you AZ locals?
High octane Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 We, my better half and two other couples took a "motor coach tour" along with 40 other people in June of last year that started in Pheonix, then Sedona, Grand Canyon, Trading Post, Monument Valley, Lake Powell, Bryce, Zion, and then ended in Las Vegas. It was a good trip, but record setting heat, as I wish we had gone in early May but the other couples had plans and couldn't get away at that time. Sedona is a really nice town and I would love to go back there.
crazyjim Posted October 23, 2017 Author Posted October 23, 2017 That sounds like a neat trip. Would you happen to remember the name of the outfit? We'd be flying into Phoenix.
Rob Hall Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 When I lived in Phoenix I used to do weekend drives up through Prescott, Sedona, Jerome and Oak Creek Canyon to Flagstaff. With side trips sometimes out to Williams and Winslow. Very scenic up in northern AZ...
cobraman Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 Hey Jim. I went to Sedona last year. Had a great time. We liked the open bus (trolly ) tour which was nice. Pointed out many rocks that looked like Snoopy for example. We ( wife and I ) were on the last tour of the day and the only people on the bus ! The driver was great very informative. The church in the rocks was nice to visit. Also the Jeep tours are fun. I think we were on the Pink Jeep Tours one. I would email for free information packet. Nice little town to walk around in. Good places to eat. We only stayed about a day and a half and can not remember the motel we stayed in. You mentioned going to Surprise. I have a sister and also a BIL ( not a married couple, two different homes ) and while it is a nice town I can't really give you any reason to go there. If you have friends or are looking to relocate there that's a different story. I was just there yesterday as a matter of fact. You could go visit the lake. Lake Pleasant it's called. Been going there every couple of weeks for 7 years or so. Perhaps someone who lives there knows some places I am unaware of. I also hiked in the White Tank Mountains. Not sure that is Surprise but if not it is fairly close. As I said its a nice clean town that has a ton of shopping and many, many place to eat. If you go have a great time ! There is also a nice zoo off of the 303 not far from Surprise. You would also pass a zoo most likely going from Sedona to Surprise. Can't recall the name but we stopped there also. They have a nice zip line at that one but it was closed when we were there.

We'd be flying into Phoenix.Yes Caravan Tours, as we just got back from another Caravan tour a couple of weeks ago, our third one. Call: 800-227-2826 and ask them to send you their catalog. It cost you NOTHING to receive it and look at it.
crazyjim Posted October 24, 2017 Author Posted October 24, 2017 (edited) Surprise used to be a small town when I I was there in 2000. Checked the census and it’s grown. Too big now and off the list. Got an email int to Pink Jeeps.I’ll check on Caravan Tours tomorrow. Thanks for the info guys. Edited October 24, 2017 by crazyjim

Got an email int to Pink Jeeps. Surprise is a sprawling suburb now.....according to Wikipedia, the population was 30,848 at the 2000 census; however, rapid expansion has boosted the city's population to 117,517 at the 2010 census, an increase of 281%. I know some people out there, seems too far out from Central Phoenix for me..when I lived in Phoenix, I was more a fan of downtown and central Phoenix and the near East Valley burbs like Scottsdale and Tempe, worked in both for years, lots of good restaurants and stuff to do in them... PARTSMARTY Posted October 25, 2017 Posted October 25, 2017 I hope you go and have a great time-you deserve it my friend.
crazyjim Posted October 25, 2017 Author Posted October 25, 2017 Still planning things/places we want to do/see.
Ace-Garageguy Posted October 25, 2017 Posted October 25, 2017 If you like to drive, the run south from Flagstaff on 89 through Oak Creek Canyon is lotsa fun. Gorgeous scenery. I was out there for a couple weeks last year.Sedona is full of art galleries too, which you probably know, and you can easily spend a couple of days in them if you enjoy that sort of thing.

I love the drive on 89 through Oak Creek Canyon and Jerome to Prescott...and then 89 & 93 on down to Wickenburg. Great driving road..very scenic.
Greg Wann Posted October 25, 2017 Posted October 25, 2017 (edited) https://verdecanyonrr.comhttps://www.nps.gov/moca/index.htmThe wifey and I and some friends did this. We bought the upgrade tickets and got served food. Also the Phoenix Zoo is good. You can pet the giraffes there on the feeding deck. Edited October 25, 2017 by Greg Wann
Ace-Garageguy Posted October 25, 2017 Posted October 25, 2017 https://verdecanyonrr.comWow. Pulled by vintage EMD F-units too, looks like. Thanks !
crazyjim Posted October 25, 2017 Author Posted October 25, 2017 Thank you Greg. We continue to gather info and getting more confused.
Greg Wann Posted October 25, 2017 Posted October 25, 2017 (edited) You could do a search for Arizona attractions. If you drive down Grande Avenue. You will drive by or stop at Mel's Diner. It has the big coffee cup out front that looks like coffee is spilling out of it. http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/restaurants/mels-diner-in-phoenix-serves-surprisingly-excellent-food-7376891 Edited October 25, 2017 by Greg Wann
crazyjim Posted October 25, 2017 Author Posted October 25, 2017 Planning to land in Phoenix and get transported to Sedona. We don't plan on renting a car.
cobraman Posted October 25, 2017 Posted October 25, 2017 Landing at Sky Harbor ? About 30 min. from my house. Been there many times. Prescott is about a 2 hour drive from the airport more of less and the old town there is nice. The building from Back to the Future is there . Have family there. How long will your trip be ?
crazyjim Posted October 26, 2017 Author Posted October 26, 2017 Yes. Sky Harbor. Right now it’s looking like getting to AZ on May 11 and staying for 8-10 days.
Erik Smith Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 There are some beautiful hikes all around Sedona - if you are interested in that. If so I probably have a trail guide from our trip in 2015 I could send you... My girls on Cathedral Rock:
crazyjim Posted October 26, 2017 Author Posted October 26, 2017 These old bones won't be doing any hiking, thank you.
Erik Smith Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 These old bones won't be doing any hiking, thank you.Haha! No worries - you can still see the beautiful rocks!
Danno Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 April 14 is the 14th Annual DESERT SCALE CLASSIC in North Phoenix. Just sayin' . . . if your travel calendar is already set, it's out of your timeframe. All of the places mentioned are great! IF you get to Flagstaff, it is a neat town with lots to do and see. And, Williams is at the South end of the Grand Canyon Railroad. Another neat town with lots to do and see. Just outside Williams is Bearazona wild animal refuge. Amazing!! Check it out.
crazyjim Posted October 26, 2017 Author Posted October 26, 2017 We're looking at May so it's warmer. I looked the Desert Classic and mentioned it to her. She gave me "the look". There's a train out of Williams and some Camp Verde or Verde Canyon train and we're looking at both.
