My first car was a 1966 Fairlane XL500. it was just like the GT only with a 289 instead of a 390. mine was a bucket seat, automatic console car. Emberglow paint with Emberglow interior. Wish I still had it:o.

I still have several of the old annual and the original "new tool" 1966 Fairlane kits in the stash to build. I probably will not buy this version, but the box art, and the white styrene are very nice selling points.

Love the box art! I’ll betcha they didn’t fix those front and rear windows though........ ?

I'll bet you're right too, Bill. I'll pick up a couple of the older releases for 11 bucks a pop. I could live without the pad printed rubber. But, there you go with them negative waves again, maaaaaaan. :D

I remember building this kit years ago when it was first released. The only issue I can recall was the off set on the wheels. I had a hard time getting them tucked inside of the wheel wells. Part of the problem was that I lowered the front end slightly. Built it in the dark green that was popular at that time and had the interior in very light tan color.

This is a great 1990's tooled kit, but completely free of options other that the Manual/Auto trans. Even Round2's own features list is thin. I wish that Round2 had combined this and the 427 version in one box. As it is, this is a case where Pad Printed tires and an updated (but still tiny) decal sheet are not enough to get me to pull the trigger. I hope it sells well, but I'll be waiting for next quarters announcements.

Not sure if that would be possible considering space constraints, but I have no doubt we'll see both the 427 Fairlane and '67 Mercury Comet kits released individually within the next few years. While both '66 Fairlane kits share many parts, I think the differences are unique enough to justify separate kits, much like the '69 Olds 442 and Hurst/Olds Cutlass kits.

Has anyone tried combining the original issue, more accurate '66 Fairlane body with the rest of the new kit? If so, how was the fit and was it worth the effort?

No, but I might be doing the same thing with the '67 Cyclone soon.

I've got one of the newer kits, started (of course), with the roof from an original kit.  I've also got the lower rear quarter panels and all four wheel openings reshaped using an annual kit as a template.  But then I found a couple of cleanly built annuals for cheap, plus I've got two promos in decent shape (and different colors).  If I ever finish one of the new-tool kits though, it will be the modified one.

I have the new tool promo they did years ago and I'm pretty sure they corrected the window openings on it. It's buried in the stash somewhere so i can't look at it. Can anyone confirm this?

Yes some of the promos do have the corrected window openings.

I combined an original issue '66 Cyclone with a new tool Fairlane GT, as I bought several of them, and the Cyclone I had was a builder. t worked out pretty good, It's not finished yet, but it looks good so far. I have no need to buy the latest iteration of this kit, even though the box art is gorgeous. I have a couple of "builder " old tool '66 Fairlanes and several kits for such a project. At my building rate, it may get done in a couple of years, as I have several projects in the pipeline.

I have one of the ertl kits that I'm gonna get started on... I might do a build thread on it..... We'll see...

Right now, I'm in the process of getting some kit bashing parts together for the build.. How does metallic bronze sound for paint????. ???

Sounds like it might be close to the factory '66 color Emberglow, which I believe is what the new box art is trying to portray.

If you're not going for factory stock, of course, it doesn't matter what color you paint it. B)

I was going for Emberglow on this '66 Mustang I did a couple decades ago. It's Model Master Kiln Red airbrushed over a tan primer. I think it's in the ballpark.
