Hi everyone,

I was trying to find a topic on here about casting your own backing plates but could not find anything about it. I have a set of scale 40 Ford backing plates and was wondering if and how I could make an "unlimited" amount of them for my own personal projects by casting them in resin.. if that is the right term? If anyone has any tips on how to mold my own brakes that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Austin

Austin, If you can post pictures of the front, rear and side profile of the parts then I'm sure that many on here can help. The methods for making the molds and casting will depend on the profile and details of the part.

Since these parts are basically thin discs with detail on only one side, it would be simple to use Permatex red RTV to make slush molds, no mold box needed.  I'll provide more detail if requested.

I got a mini casting kit so now I’ll be able to cast a bunch of stuff! Thanks for the reply GerN, I will look into that. I want to try making a dropped axle next, but I’m not sure where to start.

If you try the Permatex, either build up thin coats (2 mm max) or mix in a little baking flour (about 1/20 by volume, max) or only the exposed surface of the RTV will harden.
