ericmaxman Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Guys, my next Mustang, I intend to do some roll cages for it, do you guys have any idea how I can achieve this? I want to use some of my unused sprues, since it's just laying there collecting dust. Thanks in advance. Cheers, Eric
Guest Davkin Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Sprue is usually a bit big for roll cages. I usually use either .10 or .125 diameter Evergreen styrene rod. Two main tools, a lighter and a round file. Use the lighter to soften the rod where you want to bend it. Use the round file to "fishmouth" the ends of rods where they will be glued to other rods. Use liquid cement to glue the joints, I prefer Tenax or Ambroid. David

The Modeling Hermit Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Back in the seventies we used the driveshafts from the trucks in my uncle's junk yard. This should give you an idea for size.
diymirage Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 i use iether 16 0r 12 gauge wire which i have laying around at my job its also great for exhausts or, as previously mentioned, driveshafts
my80malibu Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 i use iether 16 0r 12 gauge wire which i have laying around at my job its also great for exhausts or, as previously mentioned, driveshafts If you really want to make a roll cage, Before using sprue. Try to get some evergreen round styrene, About .100 in diameter the styrene is more uniform than sprues and will work better. Sprue has its purpose in the model building World, I usually heat it up and stretch it to make very fine long lengths of plastic! That can be used for antenna's or rigging, and as filler for holes in a body ETC.
Slim Louis Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 I usually use 3/32 evergreen tube with brass wire inside to hold its shape for late models and sportsman which scales out to about 2 3/4 inches, and Evergreen 1/16 coated wire, about 1 3/4 inches, a little under sized, but they look good spindly, for modifieds and jalopies. Other wise, this Tiger guy, is right on.
diymirage Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 that looks awesome specially like the space frame
