ranma Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 The instructions say to paint the engine black, But said Engine is a Detroit diesel . Shouldn't the engine be built a green color?
Fat Brian Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 It depends, some truck manufacturers painted engines a specific color while others left them in whatever color they came from the engine plant in. Peterbilt and Kenworth painted all their engines white until the early 80s. You'll have to do some research and see what American Lafrance did.
GLMFAA1 Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 The engine would be the color from the original manufacturer. The engine options back then were Continental (gas) and Detroit Diesel. The NFPA standards of that era was that all parts of the undercarriage and chassis were painted the same color as the body color, greg
Jim B Posted June 28, 2018 Posted June 28, 2018 Good information, Greg. So if I were to do a 1964 ALF 900 Series AeroChief 90 that has a white body, by NFPA standards the frame would be white as well? According to the Syracuse Fire Department, it was powered by a 6 cylinder 305 HP engine (Continental?) hooked to a 5-speed manual transmission. The plywood roof was added in 1968 due to the Race Riots, and it was repowered in 1973 with a Detroit Diesel 6-71N/265HP. Probably when it was rebuilt with a 100ft Seagrave midship aerial ladder.
