I reached retirement age 11 days ago but there is so much going on, which is a good thing, that I have to remember scale model car building is a serious hobby. Over the next couple of years I hope to spend more time at the work bench ( kitchen table ) and planning to come up with some quality builds, and diorama ideas too. David Well David, the question is 'What is retirement age' nowadays. I had to retire from work at 64 after an accident at work, that wasn't recognised by my management, and of course not witnessed! We had various safety issues over about 3 years due to our union rep and our health and safety rep being buddies nothing changed! My remote (based at another site) director, went potty, as there were certain jobs that only I was happy to do in our 12 person unit, but due to my injury, I wasn't able to continue (Walk). Funny really that 12 months beforehand 6 out of our 12 volunteered to a company wide redundancy call but none in our section were allowed to go. So I built a log cabin in the back garden £2k and have been out there ever since! Edited October 27, 2018 by PatW
Anglia105E Posted October 27, 2018 Posted October 27, 2018 That is the place to be Patrick.... the log cabin in your back garden..... privacy and doing what you do best. I walked out of a large company at the age of 50, having turned down an offer of redundancy 12 months previously, and went self employed. Leaving the company with no redundancy money and 23 years service was one of the biggest mistakes of my life, but going self employed was something I should have done maybe 10 years earlier. Now 65 and enjoying not only building scale model Rolls-Royce cars but also able to continue fixing computer problems for my loyal clients. I do think it is important to spend time and money on the kits that you want to build and do it now..... not tomorrow, or next week.... or next year. David
PatW Posted October 27, 2018 Author Posted October 27, 2018 (edited) Thanks for your info David. I started out as an accounting clerk in a small practice. That was difficult as father and brother were engineers. Went onto the original TSB Bank and made it up to Branch Manager and made redundant after 24 years (at 42)when Lloyds Bank took over all managers and assistant managers had to go (1500+). Had four more permanent and numerous Temp Jobs, as a 42 year old is too old for any job as I was constantly told. 3 more redundancies later joined the Open University as a warehouseman driving vans to and from the Campus, fork-lifts and pickers up to 35 feet! Thats where I finished at 64. Now hoping to downsize housewise as both sons have gone, one to Canada and one nearby in Milton Keynes. So looking to design and build a two bed bungalow (future proofing) in a timber frame construction utilising SIPS panels and under floor heating, no internal ceilings, all rooms open to the pitched roof, open plan lounge/diner/kitchen, master bedroom with en-suite,family bathroom, heat source pump, and solar panels to cover all energy needs! One big problem the price of land maybe twice the price of the build, but we battle on! Edited October 27, 2018 by PatW
