diymirage Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 hey guys im working on a plymouth GTX and i was going to put aftermarket rims from the partbox on drag tires that came with the kit here is my problem: the rims are to shallow so that when i lay them in the tires they do not touch the backinplate any tips on how to glue the backingplates and rims to the vinyl tires or should i build a shim to connect the plate and rims? thanks guys
Olle F Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 It's difficult to make styrene stick permanently to vinyl, so make some shims and glue them in. You can also put blobs of epoxy between the halves to fill the space, it's a quick and dirty way to get the right spacing without fiddling around with shims. You can't do that if you want the wheels to turn though.
KENNEDYJR Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Yep make up some shims. I will stack up some squares of styrene to build up the inside.
Robert81 Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 (edited) I have a box full of ugly or unusable wheels, I use as shims. Just find one the right thickness you need. I usually trim the lip off the rim to help it fit inside the tire. Add glue and you are done. Edited August 20, 2008 by Robert81

I think it may look odd, but if you can't fit some sort of brakes in the front you may want to save the rear disks for another build. It is your build and you make the decisions.
diymirage Posted August 21, 2008 Author Posted August 21, 2008 yeah i've been thinking bout it and i just picked up some rods for a different build, so i might try sticking that in between first.
