The box of the '62 Bel Air (Don Nicholson's) seems to show the color of the Z-11 valve covers to be Chevy engine red.  Is this correct?  Thanks

Yes, most of the ones I have seen has been painted silver, some W engine high performance engines could also have chromed valve covers.
As you may know the Z-11 was a stroked 409 to 427 cui, the Z-11 package was only available for a short time, the engine parts came late 1962 and the RPO code Z-11 Impalas was 1963 and 1963 was also the year for the Z-33 Mk II 427 "Mystery Motor"

I have seen 409s with red, silver and chrome valve covers. Depending on the application, any of these would be correct.

However, the 1963 Z-11 427 was a race-only engine. The valve covers were silver (brushed aluminum?) to match the hi-rise intake manifold.

I hope this helps.

Z-11 valve covers were different from regular 409 covers. Check out the top portion  near the fuel filter. It comes to a sharp point in the corner. Then look at the bottom, it`s rounded. Easy to replicate. Also. the color of the covers has a "greenish" tint.

The Z-11 valve covers are also slightly taller than the garden variety stamped steel 409 valve covers, to provide additional clearance for increased rocker travel with high-lift cams.

Tamiya X-31 looks close, Titanium Gold.  The valve covers on the 289 are painted that color.
