It was fun to drive as the power to weight ratio is good.........BUT....like many a Brit auto the electricals were not great. The power windows would fail shortly after each time we fix them.....and that black car with ZERO insulation got HOT fast! I'm 6'2" and I had to sit on the ground...put my legs up into the car and push myself in!!! But a fun car. Need to build my kit too!!! This and the Saab Sonett were cut from the same cloth! Had a fellow student at pilot training that owned a Sonett. It was a fiberglass coffin with a large heater. Not a great combination in Southwest Texas.
mrmike Posted December 9, 2019 Author Posted December 9, 2019 I used to know a divorced lady who had a Saab Sonnet III. She use to shuttle her little boy around in it. Tiny car! I have almost finished the chassis. I got the engine installed and the front and rear suspensions finished. More Lotus to come...
peteski Posted December 10, 2019 Posted December 10, 2019 Looking good Mike! I've had one of these kits in my stash for years - I'll build it some day. I love the looks of that car (and I do like the JPS scheme, but I wonder how it would look with UPS-brown instead of black, with gold pinstripes of course?). Funny thing is that one of my friends from the model railroad club (whom I have knows for years), owns a 1:1 Lotus Europa! I guess we never discussed cars at train shows. I found out about it couple of years ago when we elected him a president and we held out annual meeting at his place (in Hollis, NH). His is a medium metallic blue. Beautiful car! I know where to go for reference if I ever want to super-detail my model.

I could be wrong, but I could swear it was an Avengers episode. The red one you show might have been the one with he was driving with Tara King. And oh yeah.............there was certainly no missing Emma Peel driving one of those Lotus Elans! Linda Thorson was not a bad actress at all, but she was no Emma Peel! ❤️❤️ According to http://theavengers.tv/forever/index.htm and specifically http://theavengers.tv/forever/cars.htm none of the main characters drove a Lotus Europa. But maybe some of the bad guys did? That website is a great resource for the Avengers info.

The character Tara King of The Avengers TV series did drive a red Lotus Europa Series I. I refer to the pictures I posted on the first page of this thread, and http://theavengers.tv/forever/cars-3.htm and the third car down the list from the top and there are plenty of images on Google Images as well.

She definitely did drive a red Europa
sjordan2 Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 I thought you’d find this interesting. Lots of pictures of various versions in the gallery section. https://www.ultimatecarpage.com/car/5814/Lotus-47-GT.html

You got me Mike - you are correct of course! And I even used theavengersforever.tv link! I must have been half asleep. ?
Funkychiken Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 It does look like a great kit, I've never seen a real one of these in the 'flesh' Your build is coming along nicely!

I must have been half asleep. ? Not a problem Pete! I figured you might have been doing something like not reading the link you had posted. I used to watch The Avengers back in the mid to late 60's. Thanks Atin! This is a really, really good kit! All right...it's a great kit! There are several kits produced by Tamiya that I wish they would re-issue. The Jaguar Mk. II, the Morgan 4/4 and the Lotus Europa are just some of them. Edited December 12, 2019 by mrmike
mrmike Posted December 12, 2019 Author Posted December 12, 2019 I sprayed some primer on the Lotus body and I found a couple of mold lines along the front fenders and the doors to remove. I highlighted the mold lines with a pencil. More Lotus to come...
mrmike Posted December 17, 2019 Author Posted December 17, 2019 The wheels have been painted and the tires have been assembled with the wheels and they have been installed on the chassis. More Lotus to come...
mrmike Posted December 18, 2019 Author Posted December 18, 2019 I got some paint on the main componants this morning. First I reprimed the body and let that dry. I painted the rest of the pody parts with Tamiya TS-52 Candy Lime Green. I painted the interior/chassis pan with Tamiya TS-29 Semi-Gloss Black. I found a dog hair and I removed it leaving several marks behind. I'll let this dry, sand it and repaint it. More Lotus to come...
mrmike Posted December 19, 2019 Author Posted December 19, 2019 I finally painted the Lotus with Tamiya TS-52 Candy Lime Green. Now for a light polishing and maybe another coat of paint. I also painted the lower rocker panels with Tamiya TS-30 Silver Leaf. I'll polish these and give them another coat of paint. More Lotus to come...
mrmike Posted December 21, 2019 Author Posted December 21, 2019 I sanded the chassis pan and repainted it with Tamiya TS-29 Semi Gloss Black. Then, I painted the interior seats and door panels with Tamiya TS-46 Light Sand. I painted the back side of the interior panel with Model Master Flat Black Lacquer. More Lotus to come...
mrmike Posted December 23, 2019 Author Posted December 23, 2019 I performed some assembly on the Lotus Europa this afternoon. The engine has been fitted with the carbs and air filter assembly, the chassis has been joined with the Y-frame, and the seats have been installed with the compartment divider. More Lotus to come...
r60man Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Tamiya kits and paints are just fabulous. You are doing a great job with the car,
mrmike Posted December 23, 2019 Author Posted December 23, 2019 Thanks John! I really like building these Tamiya kits when I can find them. I find them to be 99% accurate and any detail I need to add can be done rather easily.
mrmike Posted January 2, 2020 Author Posted January 2, 2020 I have finished the Lotus Europa chassis. The interior is complete with the dash decaled and wood trim painted with a combination of Tamiya XF-10 Flat Brown and Tamiya X-26 Clear Orange. The engine compartment was finished with a scratch-built ignition coil glued to the engine compartment sidewall and a wired engine. More Lotus to come...
Pete75 Posted January 2, 2020 Posted January 2, 2020 Loving it! I'm planning on using that body colour later this year - pleased to see it looking great. Keep up the good work!
mrmike Posted January 2, 2020 Author Posted January 2, 2020 Thanks Peter! I have used this color on a '13 Mustang Boss 302 and it can out great. I had to use it again on the Lotus! Tamiya sprays are a very forgiving paint and they have some great colors!
Tom Geiger Posted January 3, 2020 Posted January 3, 2020 Great progress! I'm following. Funny thing- I never knew the Europa was fiberglass! I watched an old episode of Overhaulin' and learned that!
