Last month, the weather was PERFECT for painting, so I took a bunch of my models that needed painting and painted them up....

The last pic is the models mocked up with the chassis and wheels on. To see more, check out my photobucket for individual pics in the WIP section. All of these were painted withing 2 weeks of each other and I have 3 others in primer

I don't own a respirator and have never used one.... MY wife won't let me paint inside the house, so I have to paint in the garage and then set the models in the sun to "bake" the paint on.  That's why I try and get as much painted in the summer as I can.  The weather is starting to turn colder up here in Minnesota, so today I went into the garage and put all of my paints in a box and took them down into my basement until next June  ;) Can't wait to see the 4-5 cars you have painted up.....

On Monday, the HI is 50 degrees :D When I bought this house, I told my wife that I would like to put a spray booth in the basement under the steps where there is a "closet" surrounding the old water meter that isn't in use anymore. I'd like to cut the top 1/3 off of the front and put a board down to cover the hole. I'd drill an exhaust hole in the wall which will be under my deck and no one would see it. But, since it's also where the dirty laundry comes down into the basement, she thinks overspray will get on the dirty clothes  So, until she moves out or we get a different house, I'm stuck painting in the garage :P

P.S.

My wife has already spent ENOUGH $$$$ on e-bay this past month alone.... so she don't need any more things....

Steve, What types of paints do you use ? I was curious because I am up in Northwestern Ontario, so I deal with the same winters as you do. Just like you I paint in my unheated garage. I mainly use Duplicolor Automotive Paints and have no trouble spraying during the cold months. I find that the paint sprays on nicely when the weather is cold.

skibum.... I mostly use dupli-color rattle can paints also, but I like to put my freshly painted cars in the sun to help "bake" the paint on. This tends to make them a little more glossy and less flat in color, so I don't have to put a gloss coat on most of my models. Just makes it easier IMHO....

No prob Steve. I know tat there are some people that feel that spraying can't be done in the winter. It is a huge pain, so last week I order a spray booth from Pace. Maybe next summer I'll give your method a try to see how the baking in the sun turns out. :D

Skibum... I find that the best time to paint in when it's about 78-85 degrees outside, no clouds in the sky, and I paint around noon-1pm. When I start painting a car, I will put a coat of paint on, set it in the sun for 10 minutes, rotate it to the other side for 10 minutes, take it back to the garage and put another coat of paint on it and do the process over again. The first two coats will take about 45 minutes. After the final coat of paint, I will set them in the direct sun light again and then rotate the model about every 1/2 hour until about 6pm. Then I take it downstairs to cool down for two days before I touch the body and start working on it again. This technique has worked well. It's kinda like "Mother Nature's" own food dehydrater technique.
