Hey everyone. Just a reminder that although discussing COVID-19 is just fine, there are a couple of posts that are getting borderline political. Please keep politics out of this. As this point, let's stick with what we know, and not focus on what has or hasn't been said/done by our political leaders.

Thanks. :)

I think the thought process is that by limiting human interaction, it will slow the spread of the virus. It's not a cure, but will hopefully slow the spread, giving WHO the opportunity to perfect an antidote or whatever.

I theory, I agree, and think people should limit their interactions with others over the next few weeks. I don't mean become a hermit (although, I kind of like the idea of not interacting with people) but maybe avoid some of that non-essential stuff. Maybe skip going to a movie this weekend, or maybe you don't need to eat out as often.

The big issue is currently the fact that it spreads so easily, not necessarily through physical contact. True, for most people, it isn't a killer. From what I've read, it seems like most of the deaths so far are people who had pre-existing conditions and weakened immune systems. And everyone diagnosed in Canada so far has travelled out of country in the past few weeks.

It is pretty crazy when they start cancelling sports as much as they are. NHL, MLB, NBA; all halting games. F1, Curling, Figure skating; major events cancelled. F1 and PGA, no spectators allowed.

The school closures will be the next step, followed by movie theatres.

I don't think it will get to the point where borders will be closed. ALthough, at this point, I wouldn't be surprised.

The Archdiocese of New York announced that elementary schools in Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island will be closed through March 20th; no announcement from the Diocese of Brooklyn, covering Brooklyn and Queens. Also no word about NYC public schools; although, one  school in the Bronx will be shut down for one day for decon  after a confirmed case was detected.

I just heard the Australian Grand Prix due to be held this weekend has been cancelled:

'A statement issued jointly by F1, governing body the FIA and the Australian Grand Prix Corporation read: "Following the confirmation that a member of the McLaren Racing Team has tested positive for COVID-19 and the team’s decision to withdraw from the Australian Grand Prix, Formula 1 and the FIA convened a meeting of the other nine team principals on Thursday evening. Those discussions concluded with a majority view of the teams that the race should not go ahead.

"Formula 1 and the FIA, with the full support of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC) have therefore taken the decision that all Formula 1 activity for the Australian Grand Prix are cancelled.'

Quote from the official F1 website.

If I have to choose, I'll take the local news.

At least then I'll get a closer to realistic version of what is actually taking place!

Spot on. There isn't any of the hyperbole and histrionics on the local news here compared to what is presented by the talking heads on the national and cable outlets.

I had a Skype interview a few days back for a new contract - the next stage was to be a face-to-face. I just had an email from my agency to say that I've got through to the next stage but due to Corona virus this will also be a Skype call instead.

It's a very fine line between sensible caution and over-reaction / panic. Not sure what category this falls into!

I know it seems extreme to do all of these closing where there would be close contact but really due to human nature you can expect hat many with symptoms or have been exposed to someone with them would still insist on attending these events.

Case in point the dad that decided even though one daughter showed symptoms and the family was quarantined at home for it decided was ok to take the other daughter to a daddy daughter dance and possibly expose others!

Unfortunately there a many that are just like that who would risk infecting others for selfish reasons like not missing a game, race or club meeting.

Now as to some of the other hysteria. Was in a farm store yesterday to pick up bird feed and a couple ice cube trays and saw to women get into a fight over paper towels and napkins. (the store was out of TP)

The one lady had grabbed everything on the sheve into 2 carst and refused to let the other one have any!

Needless to say they both left without anything after the manager and a couple employees intervened. The manager then told the employee to take it all to the back and to make a sign telling customers to go to the courtesy dest if they wish to purchase those items and it will be 1 per customer of each as supplies last.

He told me the truck was due at mid day with TP, toes and napkins any way!LOL

Without testing they don't know what the rate of infection is. The fear is that if unchecked it could become 25% to 30% of the population. With a mortality rate of 1% (10x that of the flu) it becomes a very big number. So in the U.S. 25% of 330 million is over 82 million people which could lead to over 800,000 deaths.

It was announced here in Bakersfield that Disneyland was closing doe to Corona-Chan. Not sure, why but that set off the panic here in town.

We dipped into the savings last night and went out to take our chances. I don't spook easily, but I'm glad I went. TP, Soaps, Disinfectants, and of course Bottled Water (What the Everlasting, *****, is up with hoarding Bottled Water???).  We went mostly because, if we didn't play the game, there would be nothing left later.  It was a Mass Hysteria out there. But, we stocked up, on diapers for the Grandkids,  canned goods, and a few of the rapidly vanishing Meds. (Nyquil, Seriously??). My family is set and hopefully we can avoid having to go out in the frenzy again.  It was and odd, and un-settling feeling being out there jostling for stuff.  On the other hand, not playing the game would mean possibly risking not being able the get what we needed later, due to the very nature of this kind of Mass Delusion. So, (this time at least) I bought into it, and joined the herd.

I don't like doing that normally, as the Herd is only as smart as the dumbest member, and that is how you get hurt.  But, I'll feel safer now, and I can watch over things with out feeling the need to join back in the panic.

Be Prudent, but have an Idea on when to take action, and when to sit tight.  This ride is only going to get stranger for the next couple months.

The last big Virus was Sars and when it warmed up it died out some heath experts believe there might be a chance this might happen again.  Then again no one really knows this is brand virus.

Yeah, but this virus is raging in Australia, and it's at the end of the summer season there right now. Much warmer that it ever gets here in NA.

I think it is probably too late to keep politics out of the discussion.  Too much of the media is trying everything possible to tie this to the supposed unconcern of one political party.  That problem is only going to get worse and the discussion more silly.

The lack of capability to test in the US was a monumental blunder. WHO  had a viable test and the CDC chose not to use it. The big question is why. Was it an opportunity for somebody to make a lot of money?  Wishful thinking is not going to make this go away. Mandating that it will go away will not work either.  The longer this goes on there is the very real specter that the disease will mutate and become a lot more deadly.

Absolutely unbelievable. Still trying to make the connection between TP and coronavirus. If you're quarantined for 14-days and need multiple cases of TP then you have bigger problems than coronavirus.

When people panic shop, there is no logical correlation between the cause and what is purchased. People hoard extraneous items just because. There's probably going to be a run on Makita Cordless Reciprocating Saws at Home Depot and Lowe's after all the lobster ravioli at Whole Foods is stripped off the shelves.

I heard that the WHO test gave 30% false positive and 30% false negative results, which is why CDC rejected it. That level of inaccuracy makes the test actually worse than worthless.

My wife called me from her work place yesterday in somewhat of a panic. She works for an international company based out of Denmark and they were sending everybody home in their home office, the Canadian offices, and her unit here in Kansas City. Almost everyone who is Computer bound is still working but from home. She wanted me to go to Costco and get TP and other supplies. As anyone who has ever been in a Costco they know that there is normally numerus plates of TP and the thought of ever running out is unthinkable. Surprise Surprise, as I round the corner to where the endless array of paper products are located there is nothing. Not a single roll of TP or Paper Towels. The people in the store would fit into two categories: those running around with their karts running up and down the isles like their hair was on fire. Or they were the Sunday type sight seers wondering around like they're just killing time and trying to get in every ones way posable. We are the type that always have a couple of the big packages in the basement anyway so it isn't a real problem for us, but I do enjoy observing the panic on everyone else's face. I have always wondered why it takes a health issue like this to get people to wash their hands in the first place.
