The general rule is 3x the cost of the kit. If you are dealing with insurance and you don't have a rider you will probably get screwed.
RodBurNeR Posted October 17, 2008 Posted October 17, 2008 First of all, sorry that happened. To put a price on something that is sentimental is hard. For insurance purposes, you should first take into consideration how much the kit and if any aftermarket parts cost you. Then take into account the cost of paints, primer and clear to buy whole new cans. When you do this you need to do the highest prices. Example if a kit sells for $10-$20, then you need to value the kit at $20. As for putting value on the "build" or the time it took or the love you have into it. I am afraid that is the most difficult part and insurance doesn't cover heartache. Again, sorry this happened and i hope you get as much as possible.
Harry P. Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 Unless you had your models insured beforehand, you're out of luck.
CAL Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 Unless you had your models insured beforehand, you're out of luck. Pretty much, I know someone who lost their hobby to fire. Insurance payouts 0 on paint glue and supplies 0 on built models $5 a kit on unbuilt models and about 50 cents on the dollar for tools. You need a rider for replacement value for good protection, otherwise insurance considers them toys. And models that have been built insurance says the are used and have no value. Fair? No. My insurance said a video tape updated as need is the best record.
James Flowers Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 You need to get a price guide for models match as many as you can with it. Copy what you can on ebay on prices of builds like yours. I had a storm blow the doors open on my model building and damaged about 50 or 60 models. My insurance company paid me for what i could prove each was worth. I got a nice sum of money for them. Plus I got to keep them and rebuilt most of them. Good luck
ricky12 Posted October 18, 2008 Author Posted October 18, 2008 THANKS EVERYONE FOR ANY AND ALL INFO EVERY ONE HAS GIVEN .
Eshaver Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 Rick, Im sorry for you're loss. I lost my entire collection during a hurricane in 1972 when Agness came through Richmond Va. I had all the models A M T had offered as kits from 1959 until 1971. Harry and Cal are you're best responses thus far. I would go with what they sugest. Ed Shaver
James Flowers Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Ed what are you saying he will get nothing? Thats pretty much what Harry and Cal said.
CAL Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Ed what are you saying he will get nothing? Thats pretty much what Harry and Cal said. You're best bet if you know who did it is when they go to court ask for restitution. And add a ride to your insurance for replacement cost. You are still not probably going to do anything to cover built models, though.
jbwelda Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 sorry to hear about your loss, what a waste... but heres something to consider: worth of built models: $0 worth of unbuilt kits: $5 each worth of being able to kick punk kids azz: priceless!
ricky12 Posted October 19, 2008 Author Posted October 19, 2008 thanks again every one for your saport. talked with one of the cops at the ballgame the other night, he told me not to count on restitution ,because they arestted his mom while the qeustioning him for an out standing warrent ,and his socalled dad is a suspect in a local shotting . at this time the detectives havent conected him to my home but atleast two others in the erea . and beleave me i would love to find in3 to 4 years from now when he isnt a minnor .
locoengr Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Unless you had your models insured beforehand, you're out of luck. Not always true Harry. Check with your insurance agent first but you still need to add up your losses so that if (and hopefully they will catsh the @$$) that you can go after him in court. Anyway, before I got back into building, I started an extensive NASCAR die cast collection. I asked my agent if I needed a "rider" and she said no. We are covered by our regular home owners policy. Every policy is different and state laws on this all differ on this type of property. It's also at times like this that it is an unexpected wake up call that we all need to keep on top of a little better. Check your policies more often and shop around. Best of luck and I sure hope they catch the creep. Me personally, I would love to have caught him in the act as I would not have called the cops. At least not immediately.....
