I posted this as a daily accomplishment, but I figure more folks would see it here. I want to do a few custom 4x4 builds in the future so I came up with this idea to minimize duplicating my efforts. I’ve modified the Mobius F100 center sections (Dana 44 and Ford 9”) to take a 3/16” aluminum tube. This is 4” in 1/25 scale or 3-3/4” in 1/24th, which I think is not too far off. I hate all the spindly little axles found in most kits!  I also built a GM 14-bolt from scratch.
I then made a mold so that I can cast the center section around the piece of tubing after temporarily plugging it with modeling clay to keep the resin out. A piece of .156 styrene tube will slide inside this and a piece of 3/32” rod (I use a coat hanger) for an axle. The diff can be left unglued until the rest of the drivetrain is in place to set the pinion angle. The F100 knuckles will be added to the front tube after being drilled for the metal axle.FCDF0B6E-5F79-4E79-A2C1-BBAA5B8FD3E9.thumb.jpeg.d92a3162d3b65a36b2630e35515b9a0b.jpeg9E817772-B766-4A9C-9D70-8D953B2D5FB4.thumb.jpeg.5cffb74dbe95711f7b2e775ed6b61275.jpeg25843F2B-991F-4BE8-B8B6-AEDC3097A6CF.thumb.jpeg.985734215c2515d320f64025cd338ace.jpeg9578FCFD-4D27-4D52-8B03-AEEFD60410D7.thumb.jpeg.246e5e8d93b7c0e9c3b4930a100b0b35.jpeg1BF5F6DC-CA02-40B8-B24E-04E6F1076C6C.thumb.jpeg.67e021f0182a6876fec5c01b96dfed39.jpeg60283AF1-EE88-4D61-8B77-A116B8A57E12.thumb.jpeg.115ffaf35227155a783b8194a6023446.jpegF9555BD2-A10B-41CD-BBB2-E88047B61101.thumb.jpeg.6e540a973cc35f5e3c9f2af51d592d92.jpeg

Now that's scratch building!

Thanks for the compliment. As You know, some stuff is just not available or need heavy mods to be useful or accurate.

Coming from one of the best I have seen on here, that is saying a LOT!

I certainly don’t hold a candle to Charles’ talents. I’m just having fun learning off all you talented folks on here.😎

It's fun to see things like this come to fruition.  It's amazing the variety of parts and details that can be done with a bit of effort.  I'll give you an example of a side marker light I made for the Port Vue Reo.  I have to take a couple of photos but it was pretty easy to make and now to cast.

Yes, scratch building is amazingly addicting. I don’t have a lot of kits and I hate raiding them for parts...so I’ve been casting as many tidbits as I can.

While not nearly as brave as NOBLNG to cast my own, I am searching for some Dana 44 or Dana 30 axle center sections to build some upgraded axles for a couple of projects, anyone have a source? I thought I saw some at one time but can't seem to find them.

I have never ordered from them, but BNL lists some differentials and other drivetrain parts.

According to this thread they are open again as of April.
