Somewhere on the interwebs I saw a photo of one decked out with the engines and nacelles from a P-38 (x2). That would've been the XB-38 Rusty and you're right....beautiful bird with those engines. Here's an article on them: https://foxtrotalpha.jalopnik.com/the-prettiest-b-17-flying-fortress-was-the-xb-38-1619966937 Quote

You did a great job! And so did the author, of course. Here's another interesting B-17 version, the X/YB-40 "escort bomber." It was crammed with 16 guns and had the bomb bay converted into ammo storage. Before long-range fighters became available, the idea was that the B-40 would escort and protect the bomber formations. But with all the guns, ammo and new gunners, the B-40 weighed 2 tons more than a stock B-17 and couldn't keep up with the formations. Boeing YB-40 Flying Fortress - Wikipedia Quote
ChrisBcritter Posted May 14, 2021 Posted May 14, 2021 And coincidentally, several YB-40s show up in that same scene in The Best Years of Our Lives: Quote
DPNM Posted May 15, 2021 Posted May 15, 2021 I love the subject matter of your build too Jerry. My favorite US aircraft. I want to get one of these kits. Seems like when I go to HL it's NOT the 40% off week. I'll get one at some point. And I've never built a plane. I'll be watching your WiP. Great additional info and pics from everyone. Quote
JerseeJerry55 Posted May 19, 2021 Author Posted May 19, 2021 Hello all, I hope everyone's well. I have slowly come to the conclusion that I don't have a proper space to display the B-17. Therefore I am open to trading it. Any interested parties please message me. Thank you. Quote

What are you looking for in trade? Quote

It could keep up until the B-17s dropped their bombs, and then thus lightened, they were much faster than the B-40s, which couldn't keep up. Quote

A man had to have nerves of steel to fly through that and what awaited them in the skies enemy aircraft wise. My dad and two of my uncles were in England. One was a flight mechanic patching them up for the next mission but dad and Jim flew. Dad a co-pilot and Jim a ball turret gunner. Never knew my dad, lost him in Korea but my uncle Jim's plane was shot down on his 8th mission but he made it out after they crash landed as he said "in good shape seeing I only lost half a leg and one eye!" He was a card! He called them little black flowers that bloomed in the sky. Quote
vamach1 Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 An interesting story of how B-17’s were used long after WWII. https://www.arctictoday.com/details-of-a-cold-war-cia-mission-in-the-arctic-ocean-show-how-much-the-region-has-changed/?wallit_nosession=1 Quote
