Bonneville shootout next week!

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody!

Next week on the Bonneville Salt flats there will be (weather permiting) a private meet. Three land speed record cars will be attempting some fantastic speeds.

First Ron Main will be running his Ecofire LSR. Main will be attempting to break his existing record as the worlds fastest four banger. Mains car runs a GM Ecotec four cylinder engine.

Terry nish of Salt lake City will be attempting to break the Summers brothers Goldenrod record of 409 mph set on November 12, 1965. The Goldenrod was powered by four Chrysler 426 Hemi engines which were normally aspirated. Only fuel injected engines were used. No turbos, no superchargers, no nitro, only Mobil gasoline and four wheel drive. I was on the salt flats the week that the Goldenrod set a record that has never been broken.

Nish's car is powered by a Klein built Chevy engine running carburetors that puts out 3000 hosepower. The car is driven only by the rear wheels. Nish's Streamliner is currently the worlds fastest small block chevy engine powered car.

The biggest gun on the salt will be the Burkland family 411 Streamliner from Montana. The 411 is the fastest wheel driven car in the world with a one way speed of 450 mph. Driver Tom Burkland will be attempting to travel 500 mph on land, only 50 mph slower than a 747 jetliner.

Burklands streamliner is powered by two "antique" 1970's Donovan 417 blwn engines running fuel. The power gets to the salt with four wheel drive and Mickey Thompson 550 mph tested tires. The Burkland streamliner was started in 1985 with hundreds of drawings and a 1/16 scale model built with Aurora Racing Scenes engines, driver, and chassis parts.

I plan on being there for this event and will keep you posted on results.
