K-Whopper log truck, Pacific Northwest style!

Recommended Posts

Howdy. This truck started as the reissued AMT Challenge mixer truck, the mixer itself will be going on a modified Ford Louisville truck later on, and this W-923 will be paired with the AMT Peerless logging trailer.

I had to slightly modify the Peerless parts to fit on the KW frame, the frame was a sliver too narrow, my guess is that the Peerless parts were designed to go with the Mack R model, given the Peerless box art. I decided to make a stinger for the rear of the frame, as most trucks here have them to aid in cornering on tight logging roads. I went with a tapered design on the stinger. Most sub-assemblies are done, so it’ll be seeing some paint soon.

Can't wait to see what color you go with...

I was thinking black for the frame, light brown for the cab and hood, and integrating the use of gold stripe decals from the reissued Chevy Rescue Van.

These trucks sure had to be built heavy for the enormous loads they carried, and sub par travel routes..we wont call roads, wouldve torn a normal truck apart

You got that right, I have memories of being (quite literally) tossed around in the back of the family Suburban on the times in the summer when my mom would rally up log roads to take my stepdad a lunch.

Log roads are fun to put around on in a 4x4 though, but you’d wanna make sure you’re on an old road that’s not being used. Otherwise you’d take the chance of becoming a fashionable hood ornament for an Ireland truck.

Kenworth is a great choice for a Pacific Northwest logger! Like the additions! The  AMT logger trailer wheels are nice and were a very common wheel back in the day, but it  appears, IMO,  the AMT molds sank in between each hand hole. Nothing a little putty can't fix.

Thanks Gator.

How long is it ?

The frame from rad crossmember to the end of the trailer latch is 13 and a quarter inches. The stinger itself is 1 & 7/8”, but keep in mind I did cut the rear of the frame right behind the last set of rivets before joining the stinger to it. Let me know if you need other dimensions, hope this helps.

Progress has been slow on this one. I’ve been doing more work on other projects. Made and attached the taillight panel and mounts for the mud flaps. First coat of primer on but it looks like I need a little more filler in a couple spots.

Didn’t get as much progress done as I was hoping to lately but still going forwards.

She’s a roller: A8823229-5AC4-4FEC-8208-AA1400100574.thumb.jpeg.8deee6dd7ef40ff2aed5ba59bd74af6f.jpegD0DD20E3-68C6-4494-9D86-4267D108EDF4.thumb.jpeg.5f704f9398ee276ff7fa7325d8d7c05c.jpeg

And the Cummins so far:E054B77B-8EBC-4115-A717-6C0A5BC694AF.thumb.jpeg.8913f7befceb72ac186530b5db9b74c9.jpeg

As for the cab and hood, I didn’t have any luck this time around with Tamiya or Rustoleum white, so I took that as a sign and went with Rustoleum Navy blue. Time will tell if that was a good choice or not.

Maybe a silver stripe or something?

That’s not a bad way to go. I could also use the pinstripe decals from the ‘53 F100 kit I did a little bit ago:

There’s a lot of choices and ways to go when it comes to these big rig kits. It seems that whenever I have this one on the bench, half the time is used actually building, and the other half is spent staring at it pondering on which way to go with it.
