Now there's a name that I haven't heard in years. Used to shop at his Brooklyn store on Coney Island Avenue. They always tried to upsell you no matter what it was that you wanted to buy. I recall wanting to buy a 3 head Kenwood cassette deck and they tried to upsell me to a "discounted" Nakamichi deck which was about three times the price and way outside my budget even with the so-called discount. Stubborn SOB that I am, I walked out with the Kenwood. 1

It's not unusual for the mark to be allowed to win the first round. As you found out, trying to walk away with your winnings can lead to all sorts of nasty stuff, especially if the dealer has a few buddies in the crowd for backup and to keep an eye out for the NYPD (who don't seem to care about this stuff any longer). At least you got to tell the tale but many others haven't been quite so lucky. Oh, I knew what the deal was. I'm just the wiseguy type who just wanted to piss them off. My friends and I used to bust the chops of the various scammers along Forty Doo Wop all the time. It was great being a fearless, and stupid, yoot back then. That Coney Island Avenue location was a real bait and switch circus. You always felt like they wouldn't let you leave unless you left your wallet.
