I just about went cross eyed today. First time adding keys in the ignition. I drilled a small pilot hole, then a 1.2mm drill to create the recess, followed by Molotow marker. Man… these are some seriously small bits. Not perfect, but I’m happy with results. Once the wheel is on, and everything is assembled, it should add just a bit more interest to the interior. I also added the tilt wheel lever using a pin and some wire insulation.  Had some issues with my gauge cluster, the 5 min epoxy I used for “glass” over the gauges erased almost all of the printed gauge detail…live and learn. So back to square one there.

Hi guys, another small update.
The rear end is close to finished, I kept it pretty simple. The wheels are now complete and disc brakes added. I decided to flat spot the tires, first time doing that. The bonus is, it drops the stance another quarter mm… it all adds up! The door panels are close to done, just need to add photo etch window cranks, and maybe door lock knobs.
The roll “cage” is now complete as well.0196C637-9BC5-4CF7-8933-841E9EFC5423.thumb.jpeg.e78501c74725a652f0a2225d640d6605.jpeg
If things go as planned the body will get a black base coat tomorrow.

Couldn’t resist a quick mock up with black base coat done. Yes, it would look wicked cleared and polished, but it will look wayyyyyy better in satin burgundy. I have some masking to do, then hopefully get some colour on this soon.

This does have me thinking that I need to do a black build soon, minus the orange peel….

Thanks for having a look, comments always welcome.

Good to see you progressing with the paint work.

Yeah would look bad ass black, but as you stated the chosen colour is going to be way better as seen on the 1:1 inspiration.

Sounds like a plan, look forward to seeing what subject you chose to coat in black.

Thanks fellas!!
Another small, but for me significant update. Got the masking done on the body, and foiled the window trim. The plan is that the rear panel, skirts, splitter, and window trim will remain black. Not sure how the window trim will work out, but hoping for the best.

Then the exciting part…

She’s in colour! Three mist coats and one medium coat. I will let it sit overnight, then give it a wet sand to knock-down the orange peel. If all goes well, one more medium to heavy coat tomorrow, then let that sit for another day or two, then the the flat clear.

I love Medium Garnet red, it looks good on just about anything.

Thanks Anton, seeing it in colour is motivating me to finish this up.

Looking good with some colour on it Steve, almost looks like you are getting a bit of colour shift depending on the angle of the light.

Hi Luke, you’re right. I have noticed that with black base coats on “some” metallics, give a slight colour shift effect. It’s a look that my 1:1 ‘67 Beaumont, (which is also Med. Garnet red) has. In sun it’s quite bright, shade makes it look almost black. Hoping the flat clear gives it the right look. We’ll find out soon!

That color looks great!!  Everybody always says, "good luck covering the orange", but you didn't seem to have issue.  The interior detail looks awesome.

Hi Joe, there lots of opinions on dealing with orange peel. I am DEFINITELY NOT an expert. I usually do a light sand before final colour coat, but that can vary. What works for me is that I normally do all the “levelling in the clear coat. This one however can’t be polished or I will lose the “flat” look. So hoping for a nice flat last colour coat, the new flat clear I have appears to lay down beautifully. Wish me luck!

Thanks for following along fellas, I appreciate the kind words and encouragement.

Sorry, wasn't clear in my rambling.  I meant the orange plastic body color.  Didn't see any orange peel on your paint.  It looks smooth from the beginning.

Ah haaaaa…. Yes, the orange plastic has been a challenge. Not as bad as red, but white or grey is much easier to work with.

Ok, so I did a light sand to smooth things out. Final colour coat is on, and looks much better, smoother and deeper for sure. There is a part of me that wants to put gloss clear on it and polish it up…. Nahhh, she’ll be flat.

No ghosting issues with the bodywork which is a relief. The Dupli-colour paint is hot, and can be a bit finicky for me. I have had issues in the past, but I think I’m in the clear now.

Well…. I couldn’t resist. She’s in final paint now. I’m really pleased with the look, it looks quite different in different types of light.

The Mr Hobby “super smooth” flat clear layer down beautifully, even-in less than ideal conditions.
My next hurdle is the headers. Once again having a hard time finding a good set that will fit just right. I may have modify some… Once that’s done, I should be in good shape to get this beast assembled. Seeing the body in paint has me really fired up!

Cheers, Steve

Yes I like the look too. Maybe one of the most attractive flat paint jobs I have seen. Being over a great looking body sure is an advantage.
