I remember this from the TV series where they covered the build. I'm with you about the paint finish. Spend all that money and have it look like this doesn't make sense to me either, but many prefer the look, and it is his money after all.

Customized in every way possible - including conversion to two-door, and a Pontiac Safari roof - this car is the epitome of artisanship. Plus, it would make for a fun build in scale!
ea0863
And with that we have reached the year 2020. If we only knew what was coming, we would have all stocked up on modeling supplies! As for Hot Rod Magazine, it still continued (and continues) to go through changes. It has become more narrowly focused on driving machines, racers, barn-finds, and patina'd vehicles. There is the occasional article about a show car, and has running segments each month on retrospectives, however gone are articles on motorcycles, boats, airplanes, etc. Also gone are virtually any reference to Japanese cars (and most European ones too). It seems to be less due to bias against these other car cultures, and more owing to the fact that specific magazines exist for these genres in their own right. So I guess, all in all, I would have to say that HRM has come full circle to being a magazine for the home garage weekend mechanic and his all-American car. One sad thing that I noticed though is that it has also gone from roughly 150 pages at its zenith to just exactly 100 pages per issue. It makes me wonder how much of this is due to the internet - and how much longer HRM has before it is fully digital itself.

ea0863
HRM December 2021 had this drawing of the Troy Ladd '32 Coupe, but I'm here to tell you - the drawing does not do the car justice! I saw the car at this year's SEMA, and it is GORGEOUS. I must have taken a hundred close-ups for reference when I get around to building it in scale. ea0863
From HRM January 2022 came a surprising article about the '72 DeTomaso Pantera. I guess due to its Ford engine and connections, it was considered a part of the hot rod fraternity Lots of great photos to aid in building this Italian/American/Argentinian beauty! ea0863
And that, friends, brings us to the end of this little project I started 3 months ago. Together, we traversed 74 years of Hot Rod Magazine and roughly 110,000 pages of wonderful hot rod history and Americana. I, for one, found lots of inspiration - which translated to 22 new models I purchased, along with a bunch of engines, tires/wheels, bodies, and sundry supplies. I will now take a brief respite from these reviews and again encourage those of you finding interest, learning, and/or inspiration from HRM to post here. With 15,000+ views so far, and over 800 posts, hopefully we are putting a searchable library together for reference in future builds. Take care and be well! 1
ea0863
Hello All, after a break from the Hot Rod Magazine reviews, I decided it's time for us to catch up a little. So, the link to the free magazines is still up and working fine (just go to the main Hot Rod page and click on Magazines). I log on with Gmail, and have not been deluged with spam as some were concerned about. Without further ado, here are just a few items from more recent articles... ea0863
So, if you have a 1:64 Hot Wheels you love, and you decide to build one 1:1 - is that called "Life imitating art"? ... ...And if we were to be inspired by this car and decide to build a scale model of it, wouldn't that be "Life imitating art imitating life"?
