Hello gents

About 5 years ago i completely got out of the hobby

We moved into a different house and i simply didnt have the room or the time for the hobby

About a month ago, I got the itch again and decided to  buy a kit i have build 2 decades ago when I was a kid

This is the progress so far

A few things to note, I used vallejo paint for this, which is new to me, and went terrible (especially the base coat)

I am also not very skilled at weathering in general and Armour in specific so any help is appreciated

(And before anyone asks, I am aware the interior would have been painted body color, but I decided I wanted it to pop a little more, so I went with a cream color instead)

Welcome back to the hobby.

Its looking good and your choosing Vallejo is a good thing. Im guessing this is a Hobby Lobby purchase. I have seen Vallejo and this kit there. On fact I have this kit about 1/2 done in my first attempt at hairspray chipping. I think I went overboard but I may have to dig it out after seeing this thread. Of you have qiestions I am sure we have answers

thanks Bob

i actually bought this one online, it was the best deal i could find

im finding the vallejo has a bit of a learning curve, and what bothers me the most about it is that there isnt a cap you can "draw" from like the old testors bottles have

im really excited to get into the figure painting as well, since that was something i never really tried when i was younger, but its got to really help make it pop

I just came back to auto building after a 2 year hiatus. I got into miniatures and 40K and that entire world. So I know the path you are on in a lot of ways. I consumed Youtube vids about mini painting and techniques for months. I purchased what can be described as a mountain of paints and all the required tools of mini painting so I would be armed with all I needed. It's really a completely different discipline.  Armor and military is similar in this regard. Any advice I might offer would be watch plenty of how to's on Youtube and be ready to make some mistakes. Oh, have fun too.

It looks to me like you already are.

that is exactly where im at

i put the figures together yesterday and im waiting on an order of primer so i can get them painted

most of the videos i watched started with black primer, the way you would normally primer them

then hit it with a layer of white from the top, leaving the black in the part where you would see shades

then use a glazing method to get the actual colour on and let the shade shine through

excited to try that out

Zenithal priming is a cool idea. I myself have had mixed results with it. It truly depends on how strong the layers you put over it are. For miniatures it works well. I have mostly given up on it and have gone to tinting my primers. Particularly on miniatures. All these minis I am showing here have a Zenithal prime. As to how well it helped is debatable.

those are pretty cool

i will be starting out with the regular field grey, so pretty "boring" color

i would love to figure out how to paint the different oak leaf camo, but that is still a long way off

Thanks guys

I'm quite pleased with the progress so far

Really happy with the camo job on the uniforms

I painted two soldiers in what should be the proper green/Grey foe the whermacht and I am not loving it

I also picked up some raw umber (I believe) paint for the belts and straps, it looks way better now

Got a little more work done on the soldiers

These are all hand painted, I got one drying in black primer to try the other method on

(And this is a progress shot, still needs a lot of detail)

I painted that last soldier, I used the white over black primer and then added a glazing agent to my topcoat

Not sure if it helped a lot, but I like it
(On second thought, I should have done this with a standing figure)

I got to say, I think I'm seeing an improvement in my overall figure painting

Painting figures can be tricky, there are a lot of techniques that seem unique to that genre. At least in my own limited experience.

You have a great start on these.
