Revell 29 closed cab pickup

Recommended Posts

This is a build that has been stuck in my head for over a year now, very heavily inspired by the Boyd tribute thread. But with a little more Bullybeef flavour.

I’ll be starting with the Molded in red 80’s version and inspired by the box art from the 65 release. The stance from that release is just killer.
I have a mock up started and will start soon.
I won’t be using the stock banger 4 as it deserves an 8. It will be blue oval powered and that is a definite. Just have not decided on which engine yet. I am still gathering parts.
Because this is still in the planning stages I yet to decide on full showrod look or a well used high school hot rod custom with some age marks.

Yes!  If there was anything that came out of the @tim boydTrib' thread, it's this kit and the inherent possibilities it presents.  It has its own set of challenges and like many of the Revell kits from this era it is well designed and very buildable regardless of where the builder takes it!  From box stock to fenders up gasser, stripped of most all of its tin to rusted out rat, easy to make it your own or copy one that suites your fancy.  Kan't wait, Bil!! Bring it on... -KK

There were so many building tips that anyone can take away from that thread and adapt to their own build it’s amazing. I’m grateful to @tim boyd @Dennis Lacy @Kit Karson @Rocking Rodney Rat @alan barton  and others for sharing their tips and ideas as it has given me so much to work with in terms of ideas for my own build.

You know I'm in on this one. That is in my top 5 favorite box art examples. Great wheel and tire choice too.

As far as engine, you can of course go flattie. Keeping it blue oval beyond that may get tricky because the Y block is a longer engine (especially with the stock water pump/fan setup) so may be a tough fit in the engine bay without some serious surgery. But you could go with a 289 with some cool speed equipment which would put it solidly in the mid 60's. Lots of options ahead.

I am not really sure what is going one here. Was is she looking at so coyly? Why does the guy beside her look like he is ready to pounce? And what on earth is the guy in the red doing with his hidden hand?

The whole thing is kinda' creepy.

They're obviously discussing the sweet wheel/tire combo

Funny you should say flathead Craig, I was doing some parts inventory and cleanup the other day…

So using some tricks I learned I started on the frame and fender modifications. And while I was digging through my engine stash the other night while organizing I came across an engine that intrigues me. I rarely see it in any builds…

But I’ll keep that in my back pocket for a little while. It’s not a Ford. It does fit rather well, and It could use some nice detailing.

There is a story board playing in my head for this little vignette and it is not entirely pg friendly.

Let’s say it has something to do with a trade deal for the contents of the bed!

I’m trying to recycle every off cut piece from this kit as much as possible, here the engine mounts have been trimmed and moved forward, I could have made new ones from styrene sheet, but I’m trying to be a slight craftsman and make the frame as if it wasn’t going to be painted. Battery box will be removed as I need to make/recycle a trans mount in that location.
Second photo shows a little more parts bin digging and I have a closer representation of the box art wheels, sadly not a matching set but they do look close.

I like the wheels you've found, but the box art wheels have been in nearly every version of that cool. I've never had that 80's version with the billet wheels, so I'm guessing they didn't include the 5 spokes in that version? Surely someone should have a set floating around up north there? I have several, but my understanding is shipping across the border is $$$

Thanks Craig, I suppose I could steal the ones from my old build, but I’m not exactly going for 100% box stock here. And you are correct about the 80’s version it only has the billet rims.
And if I go with the vision of a high school hot rod, who said the kid had enough dough to get a matching set of wheels haha.

Interested in the body mods you mentioned on the bed. What all are you doing there? I noticed on the picture of your tan build the area between the top of the windshield and the roof seems larger than what I would think that area would be?

David the bed mount mods facilitate the z’ed frame so that the rear end can be lower. The tan one is box stock minus the cab visor. It became detached in one of my moves and subsequently lost. The red kit does not have one at all, as the kit was missing some pieces, the instructions do not call for it either.

Not a lot to report today, but we have engine and transmission mounts, the front engine mounts are recycled from the model a 4 banger mounts and the trans mount is made from a part of the rear spring hump. Now the flattie fits perfect and lines up nicely for the torque tube. A little more file n paper and I can call this sub assembly done. Next step in this process will be firewall and floor.

Have you ever gotten so completely sidetracked that you take on an entirely different tack.

Banger four’s intrigue me to no end, found a pic and said well let’s try that lol.

So here we have an ardun head banger four lol. It may come together with some paint and go in a future model A project, but it sure killed a couple of hours on a boring Sunday morning where I have been trying for motivation of a couple of lingering projects including the closed cab pickup.
