Nacho Z Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 Next up on my bench is the 1/8 scale Evil Iron Trike. This is for a Halloween themed FB group build. It is about the only group build that I take part of. I have one month to build it. I am going to try to make it a halfway decent model with a minimum of added detail. Preliminary fitting of parts show that the body is going to take a good amount of work just to not have massive gaps around the 4 parts that make it up. It is a big kit and will take up a chunk of my work bench build space. Here is what came in the box. I realize that I forgot to take a picture of the decals. If anyone wants to see them, I will take a picture of them and post it. Now, what color to paint it??? I want to keep it a darker color. I reached out to a few of my buddies and one of them suggested House of Kolor Brandywine. He even provided a link to Scale Finishes, who carry HoK. Looking at their website, I was also intrigued with Wild Cherry so I placed an order. BTW, the paint was here in just a few days. Great service from Scale Finishes! On to the spoon test. I used Tamiya gray primer and Tamiya Gold as the base. First picture is just the paint, second picture is with a quick shot of clear. No prep and no polishing, I'm just looking for the color. I'm not sure that I am happy with either color for this build. Don't get me wrong, both colors are gorgeous, I'm just not 100% sold on them. My wife and I were out and about and I picked up some fingernail polishes. Here are the results. I'm really digging the reds on the black spoons. You can disregard the pink one. Finally for this first post, I will show you the body pieces put together. If you look at some recent YouTube videos on this kit, you will see that the poor fitting body panels are not just in my example. The first picture has a 1/43 Camaro in it for a little size comparison. In this picture of the rear of the body it should be noted that I have already began to fill seams. I used Tamiya liquid cement to glue everything together and I use CA glue with kicker as my main filler. I will try my best to be consistent with updates on this one. Thanks for looking in! I'm open to suggestions and comments about the build. Cheers! 1 Quote

I was pretty excited when I saw that it was coming out. Hopefully it will make a nice Halloween themed build. Quote
Street Rod Posted October 7, 2023 Posted October 7, 2023 Looks good so far! I’m going to follow your build as I want to build one of these myself. The HOK Brandywine will look good on it, I also like the sugar sugar nail polish on black, I’ll file that one away for future reference. Quote

I think that I will probably use the Brandywine. I am going to try it over a slightly darker metallic color. It looks good over gold, but I was hoping for a slightly darker hue. It is hard to tell how it will look on such a large body. On the other hand, those nail polishes are such gorgeous colors, but once again, I'm not sure how they would look on that big 'ol trike. Nacho Z Posted November 7, 2023 Author Posted November 7, 2023 They say that time flies when you are having fun. This is not the case with me...lol. It has been over a month since my first, and only, post. Obviously, Halloween has come and gone. I missed the deadline. Fortunately, it appears that everyone else did too! The admins extended the deadline until the end of November. This kit, The Evil Iron Trike, has been a joy stealing, soul sucking, pig of a kit. I suppose it does not help that I'm trying to hit a deadline. Anyhow, let me show you where I am at with it. I will put a caption above each picture as needed. Here are the mace ball taillights. The molding is fairly representative of many parts in the kit. One taillight cleaned up, one to go. You have to install 8 individual spikes to each taillight. The attachment points on each spike are rather large. A little time and effort with a sanding stick and/or pad will help smooth everything out. I didn't take a lot of pictures of the engine while it was being built. In the sake of time I had decided to just leave the kit chrome pieces as is. There was a lot of scraping to remove the chrome so that glue would work. I added a black wash on the ribbed bits. The frame was on par with every other piece of this kit. This picture is a little out of chronological order, but I wanted to show the gas tank and back side of the body. Multiple sessions of sanding, filling, priming, sanding, filling, priming. The gas tank is ready for paint. The back side of the body is also as good as it gets and ready for paint. As of last night, I glued in the front side of the body, (the piece with the seat), and it is worse than the back. Lastly, I decided to light the skull eyes, the headlights and the taillights. I purchased a few items from Evan Designs and started to play with them. The original setup was far too bright. I painted the inside of the skull black and I will use the taillight LEDs in the eyes and the eye LEDs in the taillights. That is all for tonight. I will be back when I have some significant progress to post. Thanks for checking in! 2 Quote
BlackSheep214 Posted November 9, 2023 Posted November 9, 2023 Not too surprising on the flash. Old molds from Revell. Looking good so far. I remember seeing that kit in the 70s. I building the oldie Revell L.A. Street Chopper and the California Highway Patrol Police Bike kits. I’ve been looking for the Yamaha Dirt Bike kit for years for a decent price. There is another dirt bike kit I wanted to get but can’t remember what one it is. The only thing I remember was the box cover showing the dirt bike in action photo. Suzuki or Husqvarna dirt bike perhaps? 1 Quote
Nacho Z Posted November 11, 2023 Author Posted November 11, 2023 Not Monday night, but I thought I would do a quick update on the trike. I masked the battery box (?) strap and shot some Alclad chrome just to add some visual interest. I also was able to add a little more to the frame. Here is another example of the quality control issue with this kit. I am assuming it was still a little warm when it was packaged. I know the mold is not misshapen like this. The "rubber" is nice and thick and seems to have a bit of a memory. I tried to straighten it out but was unsuccessful. I went ahead and glued the wheels in. Quote
BlackSheep214 Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 You’re making good progress on this one. Such a shame to see the tires warped. 1 Quote
Nacho Z Posted November 27, 2023 Author Posted November 27, 2023 The second deadline for this FB group build is this week, the end of the month. This will probably be the last update. Because I have not been very faithful with my updates, the leap in progress is a bit large. I just haven't had my heart in this one. A quick mockup. At this point, the body work is complete, and she is under primer. The frame is built, the rubber is on, and the engine is nearly finished. I shot 4 coats of House of Kolor Brandywine over Tamiya TS-21 Gold. The pictures don't really capture the true color that you would see in person. It is a darker red than the pictures show. Three coats of Tamiya TS-13 Clear straight from the can. The tank and body have not been polished yet. And of course, another mockup. You may notice additional parts added since the last mockup a few pictures prior to this one. Last night I masked off the seat and painted it. The masking took way longer than I thought it would. The seat is a concave, compound curve. That's it. My next post on this one should be in the Under Glass section. Let me know if you have any questions about this build or this kit. I'd be happy to answer them. Thanks for checking in! 3 Quote
