AMT 40 Ford

Good luck with this one James- you'll enjoy it. I built a stock version recently and fell in love this kit. Like Bob, I have a second one too which I'll do as a competition version.

Not familiar with this Coke issue-  does it have other decals or just the box art ones?

Nice project James.  I've built one of these kits and just aquired another one.

Thanks Bob. Mocking up the body and the hood is a terrible fit. Going to need some work.

Thanks. It only has the Coke decals which I am not fond of. I'll need to see if I can find some different ones.

Making a little progress. Got the engine almost ready. The blower scoop in the kit is ridiculous. I found a better one in my parts box, dechromed it and the headers, then painted them flat black. The headers will be installed after the engine is in the chassis. I also have a wired magneto coming from Scale Repros Plus that I will install.

What I wanna know is what's with this obsession with Coca-Cola?   I've got a growing collection of Coke decals that I will never use. And then there's the vending machines, the bottle cases, hand truck, all that nonsense. And then...the yellow styrene. 😞 it's a sickness, but not my sickness. I don't even like Coke. 😕 .....it rots your teeth.

OK, I'm done. 🥴

Fwiw, any of the AMT Trophy Series Ford custom engines are pretty much drop in swaps. The '32 roadster has a hemi, the '32 Coupe has a pretty crappy smbc, The '34 pickup has an FE Ford, the '25 T has a Lincoln "sort of", The '36 has a Pontiac and the '40 sedan has an Olds. I really don't like Nailheads, so mine will get the Pontiac or Olds engine.....

It's a collectable thing. I used to date this woman that was a Coke collector. I don't recall ever seeing her drink one though. They make telephones, plates, dolls, those Christmas bears and tree ornaments and all sorts of that stuff. I doubt it will ever be worth more than what you pay for it, but people collect it.

It's just a way to generate capital outside the normal demographic. If you look at the kits in the Coke series they have all been reissued within the last 10 years as regular issues.  90% of those Coke kits will never get opened, much less built. But more money in the coffers means more money to invest in new/refurbished tooling.

Coke collectors. OK, I know they're out there. And I suppose a small percentage of buyers only buy them for the brand identity, but my guess is that most actual kit builders would much rather have drag racing or automotive equipment brand decals in the kits and not have to deal with the problems associated with red or yellow plastic. Maybe I should sell my empty boxes on Ebay to those who appreciate the Coke logo a lot more than I do.

Yes, I'm well aware of the Coke collectibles.  I don't collect it but I guess I don't have a choice if I want the kit. I bought a few at Ollie's. I was horrified when I opened the box and had a bright yellow '40 coupe staring me in the face.

That would probably work!  Car modelers are a very small niche market.  There are many more Coke, TV and movie memorabilia collectors out there.  Tom Lowe has been very astute in licensing and marketing to the broader markets.

Some sickos I heard collect model cars... wait... too close to home...

Women get some odd fixations. Like those fake-flower buyers I get stuck behind in craft stores. Others to watch out for are Disney and clown collectors...

Looking forward to this build. I have this one and the Lindberg copy in my stash.  The 40 Ford Coupe Trophy Kit was the first model I ever built, got it as a Christmas gift in 1959.

Thanks.

Looking good James.  Yeah, that bug catcher is a waste of plastic.

Thanks Bob.

I don't like coke either Jim. And I don't like the decals, I'll try to find something else.

I tried a hemi from a 32 kit, but couldn't seem to make it fit right without a lot of cutting up the frame and building mounts. Didn't want to go to all that trouble and settled with the kit engine.

Don't mind my rant, Jim, I was just venting. I wasn't disparaging you.  I can see maybe one or two models that would be appropriate for having Coca-Cola plastered all over it but I just feel like "enough, already with the Coke nonsense!". I'm just tired of it. I have a copy of the Revell '37 Ford panel truck that I can use some of those (admittedly, nice) Coke decals on. Then I'm totally done with it.

The Lindberg kit has a 312 Thunderbird engine in it that might fit right in. I used it in my 40 Ford to build a circle track modified instead of going with a flat head. Just an idea.

I had already decided not to use the Coke decals. I've built a few of the coke kits and never use the decals. I built the 40 delivery van and used Miller Beer decals instead of the cokes.
