Rockford Posted June 17, 2024 Author Posted June 17, 2024 (edited) I decided to try and apply the white stripe on the wheel opening. I found a Tamiya paint bottle was slightly smaller than the arch, so I wrapped it in tape until it fit snugly. I trimmed the stripe decal right at the edge on one side but left a little film on the other side for support. After soaking the decal I laid it on the arch and wetted it with a brush to keep it floating, then teased it around the arch against the bottle. Pull the bottle away and it looks passable. Then there's the straight sections. I'll let it dry and try the other side tomorrow. Will it stay on? We'll have to see. I wish I could paint it but shaky hands. Other option is white electrical tape cut to 1mm. Edited June 17, 2024 by Rockford Spelling 1
Jürgen M. Posted June 18, 2024 Posted June 18, 2024 Looks really nice! Have you tried to cut it out of a wide tape or sticking foil? I know it's not exactly easier than how you did it (and that was great) but it might work too! Use the prepared bottle as a template, draw the circle on the foil and lengthen it according to the shape of the fender before you cut it out of the foil! Then you can use a brush and paint the white stripes! Just an idea! But yours worked Out pretty well! ? 1

If I'd had thought about it before paint I'd have used 1mm square rod, then rubbed it right down until it was just proud. Then a little fine sanding after paint would bring a nice clean white line out. Never mind, it's on. I might paint the edge of the wheel opening white too.
Jürgen M. Posted June 19, 2024 Posted June 19, 2024 Looks really perfect! Very neat job! I like the colored hubs and wheel bolts! A work of dedication! 1
The Brush Posted June 19, 2024 Posted June 19, 2024 Hi, Every time i look it gets better, Nice work on the decals. Have you tried dry transfer lettering like letraset etc. Good for individual letters. Keep up the good work. 1

Do you know, I've known about Letraset since I was in school and they never crossed my mind! What a good idea. If I'd thought about them I might have tried making the decals myself because the hood stripes aren't quite right, the top stripe finishes too early, I'm thinking of using leftovers to extend the white line to a point. However, I'll think about them for next time. I'd like to do a similar coloured truck for Will, as if they grew to 2 units over time. I could use them there. Thanks for the thought and the compliments. Edited June 19, 2024 by Rockford

Rockford Posted June 22, 2024 Author Posted June 22, 2024 This is now on the verge of completion. The main issue is licence plates. Using a still photo Force sent me I copied the plates on the front of the truck. There's a shot of the trailer too with 3 plates so I made them. I draw them at 100% and print them at 3%. They come out very crisp. Here's my test prints:- Tomorrow I'll use decal paper for a sharper image.
Rockford Posted June 22, 2024 Author Posted June 22, 2024 I've only just realised that Movin'On is 50 years old! Which means that the W900s in the series would be 50 years old too! Wow!

The only known survivor from the series is currently under restoration and is at the final stages and it's one of the 1974 trucks. One thing that bothers me is the emblems and KW bug should be gold wich they were in the TV series so they must have been changed sometime under it's life. Here is some pictures from the Movin' On facebook group posted recently. Edited June 23, 2024 by Force
Rockford Posted June 23, 2024 Author Posted June 23, 2024 Great pictures! Thanks for posting. It doesn't look like an "old" truck, it still looks current, probably because its descendants are still knocking around at work. I can imagine the gold emblem was highly valuable at the time, I know Twinsticks on YouTube had trouble getting one for his Smokey and the Bandit tribute.

I can imagine the gold emblem was highly valuable at the time, I know Twinsticks on YouTube had trouble getting one for his Smokey and the Bandit tribute. The gold emblems were on 1973 Kenworth's in the US to celebrate Kenworth's 50th anniversary, Canada built Kenworth's didn't have them, but they have been used on later trucks too, I believe the 007 Edition also had gold emblems. But for some reason I don't know both the 1974 trucks used in Movin' On had gold emblems and KW bug on the grille, I have several pictures where you clearly can see them, could be that as 1974 was the first year for the V.I.T. package, Very Important Trucker, it could be the reason for them to have gold emblems and all pictures I have seen on 1974 V.I.T. trucks have gold emblems, but I don't know, they do have them. For the Smokey and the Bandit, trucks, the KW bug was painted gold and black on both trucks, but the real gold KW bug was gold and red, allthough one of the trucks used in Smokey and the Bandit was indeed a 1973 and had gold KENWORTH side emblems, the other one had chrome. Here is a picture of KW bug on one of the Smokey And The Bandit Trucks. Here is how it should look for the 1973 trucks. Backside. Here is both the 50th and 75th anniversary emblems. And here is a picture where you clearly can see the gold KW bug and the side emblems on the hood and sleeper are also gold, it has the beige with green buttons V.I.T. interior with highback seats and 60 inch sleeper so it has to be one of the 1974 trucks. leafsprings Posted June 25, 2024 Posted June 25, 2024 (edited) Thanks for sharing the restoration photos Hakan! They are doing an excellent job, correct wheels and bias tires make a world of difference, plus the correct engine is icing on the cake. It will be a time capsule back to the mid 70's. Rockford Posted June 28, 2024 Author Posted June 28, 2024 (edited) Explain this. In one season Sundance went from one plate to many plates, then a different set of many plates. Only the bingo plate and Idaho stayed. Edited June 28, 2024 by Rockford
Rockford Posted June 28, 2024 Author Posted June 28, 2024 (edited) Long shot here. Does anyone know what this "drom" is in the background of this shot? It appears to have valances that drop over the chassis. Looks like a Marmon too. Edited June 28, 2024 by Rockford Text

They used two different trucks might be one answer, but the plates changes during the first season and I have counted to six different plate setups, eight if you count in the plates that changes colors but have the same letters and numbers, the second season the plates are the same throughout the series. leafsprings Posted June 29, 2024 Posted June 29, 2024 (edited) Thanks again Hakan for more info on the subject. About the series, the producers had to juice up the typical lives of owner operators to get the viewers., so low and behold, they became bogged down in drama in every location instead of movin on down the road making money like most independents. I read somewhere the producers had to lighten up the storylines for season 2. IMO, it was the last couple of episodes of season 2 that killed the series, Sonny became a race car driver, then a deep sea diver and then a country western singer. Rockford Posted June 29, 2024 Author Posted June 29, 2024 Good thinking on the rig switch! I suppose a good place to hide a production rig is in a truckstop! Thanks lads.

It was really like the old wandering cowboy series of the sixties, only instead of horses they got around in a Kenworth.
Rockford Posted June 29, 2024 Author Posted June 29, 2024 I found some KW emblems for the mudflaps. They were from the green T600 version from Revell AG. However, the mudflaps I'd made would curl up if I applied them so an alternative was required. I salvaged some clear acetate from a box . It was only 0.25mm thick. I wrapped it in electrical tape with the bracket included at the top. The final width was only 0.5mm so looks nice and thin still. Then I could add the KW decals. Look good. Also added the trailer mudflap lettering and license plates. I printed two "FLEET FLYER" insignia but they just shriveled up when I soaked them. I'll try again on my next print.
Jürgen M. Posted June 30, 2024 Posted June 30, 2024 Beautiful build! A small version of the real thing! Looks fantastic! 1
leafsprings Posted June 30, 2024 Posted June 30, 2024 You're getting very close to the finish line, excellent detail work! 1
Rockford Posted June 30, 2024 Author Posted June 30, 2024 Well, I think I'm at the point where any more fiddling around with it will just cause me to damage something and I won't be able to live with myself! It looks good to me. So I'm leaving it here now and posting it in Under Glass. Still can't quite believe that I've done it after 50 years. 2
