Brudda
Ok, I’m trying to build an aircraft. 1/48 P51k. Here is the instrumentation panel. Pretty small.
Brudda
Seat and instruments completed. These parts are so small and require so much attention.
djmcguire
That dash panel looks amazing...huge amount of detail for such a small piece.
Snake45
You are doing FABULOUS so far! The fuselage fuel tank on a P-51D/K (behind the pilot's seat) is black. And the floorboards are plywood. Does this kit include both types of propeller, or just the Aeroproducts prop? If the latter, you're pretty stuck with building it as a K model. If it also includes the much more common Hamilton-Standard prop, you can build it as any of the many thousands of Ds.

Not anything to copy. I have a friend who his dad bought one for $800 . Restored it his way and then sold it to be an air racer. Here is my progress so far. Going to try to foil the plane. A foil challenge.
Brudda
Ok here are my references and the props. Airfix has come along way. I collect pretty much all the p51s I can get. I have all of the 1/32 zoukei Muira, tamiya. Revell p51’s. Most of the 1/48 p51’s and some 1/72. This is my second aircraft build. The first is a Pitts biplane. I entered that plane in the Vegas IPMS nationals and it took a third. I give the aircraft guys at our club a bad time. I tell them “what’s so hard about aircraft modeling?” I’m pretty sure that’s going to bite me in the you know where. But it’s great giving those guys a hard time. Snake45
Brudda, Fabulous! I am impressed. You know your stuff, or at least where/how to find it. I have that book, too. It's pretty nice. BTW, I saw that red #46 P-51C just last week. Yes, the real one--it still exists and it looks magnificent! Drive on!

Good morning Snake, I really do not know much about aircraft. I just research and have many aircraft friends. I have helped a friend build a 1:1 Pitts biplane. Fantastic experience. That’s why I built a 1/32 Pitts . With a real build, the model was a little easier. 12 years ago I was going for my pilot’s license but a stroke got in the way of that. If there was a good thing it was a doctor that told me if I modeled, that would take care of my fine motor skills. I had to show him the finished model. And that was the start of my modeling hobby. Cannot fly but modeling is pretty fun. And you meet the coolest people. My wife was relieved, when my pilot interest was put on hold. I wanted to start up my license again, the wife said do anything else and I will not complain. So if I spend a little for kits, I do not have to worry about the wife. I guess the stroke was a blessing in disguise. The p51c has to be an incredible aircraft. I live in Reno nv. And we do not have the air races anymore . You are blessed to see that p51.

First saw it in the late '70s at NASM in Wash DC. It's now at the NASM's Dulles annex and looks better than ever. NASM used to publish an entire book about the history and restoration of this airplane. Dunno if it's still available, but I have a copy from back in the day, and it is EXCELLENT. Well worth tracking down a copy if you have to. More later. I have kind of a busy night going on now. Apparently OOP, but commonly available and reasonably priced. EXCELLENT book, well worth any amount. I've had mine since it was brand new (1978). https://www.amazon.com/Excalibur-III-Mustang-Aircraft-National/dp/0874746353

A foil challenge. Wait…you’re going to use Bare Metal Foil on that mustang kit? I hate to burst the bubble on your method. P-51 Mustangs during WW2 are never shiny chrome. They were dirty and over time you find them with varying shades of bare metal silver panels on fuselage, wings, etc… I use a couple different shades of silver to represent a silver P-51 Mustang of WW2, never chrome. A P-51 Mustang applied with bare metal foil overall would look tacky. How will you seal in the decals? Clear gloss coat will most likely mar that shiny chrome finish you’re hoping for. It certainly won’t win any trophies at a IPMS show. Then again, if you’re building to represent today’s restored museum quality P-51 Mustang…. Don’t take it to offense. I build mostly model aircraft kits nowadays but still build a lot of car models as well. Edited November 8, 2023 by BlackSheep214

Brudda
Fitting fuselage. Air fix is not a tamiya kit. You have to make things fit,

I've built several Airfix kits with no issues. Tamiya is practically shake n bake right out of the box. Yes, Tamiya are good kits. I've done several Tamiya kits over the years. Brudda
Anyway you guys were right about him… here is the foiled experiment. I tried it several times to learn how to apply it. You have to stretch the foil . Without ripping it. I’m going to try to heat the foil a little. To repair aluminum on autos you need to preheat the panel. So I’ll try this. BlackSheep214
It is extremely difficult to achieve a flawless finish using BMF on an aircraft model kit. Very few people can do it. But you're trying. Honestly, why not airbrush using Alclad Chrome on top of a gloss black base coat?
Brudda
Comparing the f-16 to the p51. The modern technology is amazing. The size of the p51 is small to the f 16, and the f16 is a small fighter in today’s world.
BlackSheep214
Compare it to a 1/48 scale WW1 biplane…. A stark difference in size.
Ace-Garageguy
Very nice work...especially that tiny little panel. I've seen enough of your other work to believe you'll achieve the results you want with foil.

At an IPMS Regional that took place, here in Denver, years ago, I entered a Hasegawa 1/72 scale Sherman tank in the small scale armor class, and won. They didn't believe me, when I told them I'd built it in less than 24 hours! That was fun!
