Rockford Posted May 13, 2024 Posted May 13, 2024 Can't you hide the chassis joint with fuel tank brackets etc...? Either way it's coming together. Well done! Fascinating stuff, mixing so many skills.
Jürgen M. Posted May 14, 2024 Author Posted May 14, 2024 Thanks very much, Rockford, and yes, the gap in the chassis will of course be partially hidden by the fuel tank brackets. Still I might try to hide them additionally in some way. I got the 1mm brass rods yesterday and shaped and fit in the u-bolts. Now I can put in the rear axles in form of 2mm steel rods. The brake drums will be fixed in position the same way as in front. I'm only assembling so far as all the parts will be the same color later. Everything else will be assembled later and painted separately .
Jürgen M. Posted May 16, 2024 Author Posted May 16, 2024 The radiator is in place, the engine just placed to see if it fits! Fuel tank brackets and stabilizers are also in place! A few more chassis parts to print then the engine will be completed. The exhaust manifold is the only engine part which is not printed. I had one in my parts box so why not use it!
Jürgen M. Posted May 20, 2024 Author Posted May 20, 2024 Thanks! ? If I may ask, did these trucks have u-bolt fixed front axles too?
Jürgen M. Posted May 21, 2024 Author Posted May 21, 2024 Thanks! Then I will Install them! ? I already printed the plates to hold the u-bolts not being sure if I'll be needing them.
Jürgen M. Posted May 22, 2024 Author Posted May 22, 2024 The backing plates are in place. Now the u-bolts have to be installed.
Rockford Posted May 22, 2024 Posted May 22, 2024 (edited) Looks great Jürgen. I realise it's too late now but if you want to see what the Reyco steel-spring suspension looks like watch this video from James Pretty. Edited May 22, 2024 by Rockford Spelling mistake
Jürgen M. Posted May 23, 2024 Author Posted May 23, 2024 (edited) Thanks Rockford! It's never too late! ? I'll improve it on my next kit! The chassis is painted! Edited May 23, 2024 by Jürgen M.
Jürgen M. Posted May 23, 2024 Author Posted May 23, 2024 Nice video. Very interesting to see what hard work it is keeping a truck functional. Thanks again! I enjoyed watching!
Jürgen M. Posted May 24, 2024 Author Posted May 24, 2024 Thanks! I painted and installed the engine. Since you can't see the color of the engine in the movie I decided to paint it dark gray. I think it looks pretty good. Now the wheels, fuel tanks and some piping and the chassis is almost ready. Still need to print the exhaust pipes and the intake for the aircleaner. 1
Jürgen M. Posted May 24, 2024 Author Posted May 24, 2024 (edited) Some more progress: The wheels and battery box Fuel tanks and the air pipe from the aircleaner to the turbo charger! The second tank follows shortly as well as the mud flaps in front. Edited May 24, 2024 by Jürgen M.
Jürgen M. Posted May 24, 2024 Author Posted May 24, 2024 The second fuel tank with straps and step. The quarter fenders are from a White Western Star If I remember correctly! ? But they fit perfectly! I also added a cross bar to stabilize the frame of the exhaust system. Seems the chassis is done. Just some more piping to do around the engine. Mufflers and exhaust pipes are being printed at the time as well as the air intake.
Jürgen M. Posted May 24, 2024 Author Posted May 24, 2024 Thanks! Hope it keeps going like this! I tried out the fill primer on the first printed cab. It does hide the print lines a bit but I'd have to sand it and that's quite a pain trying not to destroy the rivets. We'll see what happens!
Rockford Posted May 24, 2024 Posted May 24, 2024 Your chassis looks excellent, looks really meaty. Love the idea of the tank straps, very novel! I feel your frustration on the cab prep, it's always a trade-off.
Jürgen M. Posted May 24, 2024 Author Posted May 24, 2024 Thanks Rockford! The "meaty" probably comes from the fat Italeri tires. But I'm happy with it. I'll be finishing the engine and exhaust system, then I'll begin the interior and cab. Stay tuned! ?
Jürgen M. Posted May 25, 2024 Author Posted May 25, 2024 (edited) Mufflers and slash cuts! Have to be sanded and primered. I'll be using a chrome spray with a flat effect. When you look at the picture at the beginning of this thread it doesn't look like the classic chromed parts on this truck are polished and brightened up. Just the marker lights, horns and grab handles look like they're polished chrome. Even the grille looks more like a dirty silver than polished chrome! Edited May 25, 2024 by Jürgen M.
Rockford Posted May 26, 2024 Posted May 26, 2024 Jürgen, great work! You're building a working truck, and "chrome don't get you home!" The aluminium was originally there to save weight, only over time did its decorative qualities get exploited. Your truck looks like one well specced from the factory with a Salem paint scheme but worked hard, quarry work doesn't lend itself to 'shiny'. Having worked with several truck fleets, I know the emphasis is very much on keeping the wheels turning and bringing money in. Your KW is going to look great though, you can't hide good genes!
