Scott Eriksen Posted April 26, 2024 Posted April 26, 2024 ,,,,,,,,,I was gonna do another truck build but I've been sitting on this one for awhile so here we go (I'm sure I will change my mind when I get back from the NNL on Saturday) If anyone else has done this build I'm open for tips/tricks ! (use the curbside Caliente body and running gear from the Fairlane) 6
FoMoCo66 Posted April 26, 2024 Posted April 26, 2024 (edited) Ooo a mercury, awesome build idea. You could consider using the moebius dyno don 65 comet chassis also, it would be more correct. But the t bolt chassis would do just fine as well. P.s. Please stay on this build, it's a very interesting subject. Edited April 26, 2024 by FoMoCo66 1
iBorg Posted April 26, 2024 Posted April 26, 2024 I look forward to seeing this build. As for using the Dyno Don Comet, it might be an option but unless you go to the auction site, it seems hard to find. 1
Altered Ego Posted April 26, 2024 Posted April 26, 2024 You can see my build on Altered Wheelbase Fun of the '64 A/FX Comet I built. I used the Thunderbolt chassis, engine, etc and it turned out nice. The notable exception is a slight wheelbase difference. Otherwise, everything works nicely. I hadn't thought of the Moebius option. That is an interesting thought. 1

I wish I had picked one up when they were new but sadly I was out of the hobby then, but now they are just so darn expensive. 1

I found one on Ebay 50 bucks shipped,,,I'll check for one at the NNL tomorrow 1
Scott Eriksen Posted April 28, 2024 Author Posted April 28, 2024 Went to the NNL today...I posted a bunch of pics for you guys,,,anyway I missed or didn't see any Dyno Don kits so I got the one on ebay,,,,did some work on it when I got back,,,cut the hood out ,the Fairlane hood is close but the front leading edge is shaped different then the Comet ,,,so I found a teardrop resin one for 5 on ebay ,,,didn't think to look at the NNL. 2
Scott8950 Posted April 28, 2024 Posted April 28, 2024 I've got this same build on my list to do. Really looking forward to watching this build. 1
Moparman18064 Posted May 1, 2024 Posted May 1, 2024 I’ll be watching Scott. I’m sure you will knock this one out of the park also. 1
M W Elky Posted May 2, 2024 Posted May 2, 2024 Scott this is a great project theses are the same kits i bashed together for these comet builds. I hope these pics help you out . I got the resin hood from SMH hobbies. Unfortunately the Howard wheels are modelhaus and are no longer available, and I don’t know any other makers. The exhaust dump pipes are in the amt 62 belair super stock kit . It’s been awhile since I built this and the moebius comet wasn’t available then. I used the amt interior, but the moebius interior tub might be a better option. 7
dragcarz Posted May 5, 2024 Posted May 5, 2024 I’ll be following,I’m very interested in your build! 1
jjsipes Posted May 8, 2024 Posted May 8, 2024 (edited) I built 2 of them years ago. I need to get them out and clean them up some. I did the Thunderbolt chassis, shortened a little with a resin hood. I believe I had gotten my wheels from Reliable Resin but, we won't go there. I built the early white car and then the later dual snorkel hood car. I will be following your build with great interest. I think these were some of Ronnie's best-looking cars. Just something about the Comet shape. Edited May 8, 2024 by jjsipes 3
Scott Eriksen Posted May 13, 2024 Author Posted May 13, 2024 Progress report----------- body shot ready for decals,,bits and pieces painted ,,, 3 kit bash Amt Caliente body,,Revell Thunderbolt for the engine and some other bits,Moebious Dyno Don 65 Comet for the chassis and some interior .I'm thinking of doing the Moebious Ford F350 race car hauler to go with this 4

The Caliente kit is for the body,,that kit is a curbside model,,so everything else is useless,,,The Thunderbolt kit is for the correct 427 and trans ,the Dyno Don kit I'm using for the chassis pan / suspension,,I could have used the Thunderbolt, but the 65 Comet chassis fits good with just some minor alterations . The Dyno Don kit uses an SOHC 427
FoMoCo66 Posted May 13, 2024 Posted May 13, 2024 Oh you were saying you used 3 different kits to kit bash. I thought you ment you used 3 of the AMT caliente bodys, my bad ?. (Sorry for the miss understanding I read it wrong). Yep using those 3 kits is probably going to get you the bestreplica of that car. 1

Brutalform Posted May 18, 2024 Posted May 18, 2024 Glad I came across this thread. I started a 64 Comet A/FX 427 last week, and it’s coming along. The engine is from the 60 Starliner. I used the Moebius 65 chassis and interior, except for the dash and steering wheel. Had to sand the tops of the door panels down slightly, but everything seems to fit pretty good. I’ll get some pics up when I have time. This is the car I’m trying to duplicate. 3
Zippi Posted May 18, 2024 Posted May 18, 2024 This is going to be a nice build of the 64 A/FX Mercury Comet Caliente. I'll be watching this one. 1
Scott Eriksen Posted May 19, 2024 Author Posted May 19, 2024 Sox & Martin kitbash 64 Comet is done,3 kits used AMT 64 Comet Caliente curbside for the body,Revell 64 Fairlane for the 427 side oiler and some other bits and the Moebious 65 Dyno Don Comet Cyclone for the chassis and interior . Had to make the headers from solder . Paint is Testors with urethane clear . Slixx decals.I don't know if I got the hood paint scheme correct or not ,,they had quite a few paint variations of this car for the short period of time they ran it and I could not find a picture showing the complete top of the car paint layout .The biggest hassle was the BMF on the side trim and trying to replicate the aluminum insert .The AMT Caliente body wasn't the greatest as far as crispness of the mold 6
