Hello Everybody!

I'm getting back in the groove (rut?) of my normal life with more bench time!

Here's the next update on the Ford Galaxie.

After allowing some cure time for the purple paint, it's time to mask and shoot the flat black for the hood scoop.

Success! Finally! The paint for the hood is done. At least until it comes time to detail paint the script on the front. :)

As always, thanks for taking the time to stop by for a look and please feel free to post any comments you may have.

Hello Everybody!

I realized the other day that I started this build back in May and I'm beginning to feel the need to have it completed. So I'm going to focus my next few build sessions on accomplishing that.

I started applying some BMF to the side spears and drip rails. I find it's often best to do the foiling in stages.

Most cars of this era had a tint strip across the top of the windshield. I often try to replicate this with varying degrees of success. This time I brush painted some Tamiya X-23 Clear Blue. It dried a little frosty. I may try to fix that... or I mat decide to live with it.

David, I think I would just remove it if it won't ruin the "glass"( or the paint job) doing so.  The blue clashes with the body color. Maybe if you have something more purple for the tint? Or just eliminate the tint altogether.

Ya know? I'm actually considering that suggestion Jim.

More people would be likely notice presence of a feature of marginal quality than notice the lack thereof.

Hello Everybody!

The push toward the finish line continues!

I continue with the application of more BMF!

It usually takes me several one to two hour build sessions to complete the foil work on an average American car.

This most recent batch of BMF is much better than the last batch I ordered several years ago. This stuff actually sticks! The other batch did not. It would literally fall off the model like a tree leaf in Autumn. The only trouble with this batch is the adhesive it leaves behind after the excess foil is trimmed and removed.

The residual adhesive is easily removed with some mineral spirits and cotton buds... But that's an entire build session or two being used for something that shouldn't need to be done.  And there's always a chance of damaging the paint.

That's it for this round!

Trim looks nice, makes the color pop.   I found the same with a recent batch of BMF.  Although as I get to the end of the sheet, ie the middle as I work my way in, I’m finding it harder to get the foil off the backing.   Glue must be stronger in the middle.  ?

That's a very good point, David. I'm sorry if my comment has offended.

Not to worry Jim, I'm not offended at all. I meant to say that I was considering the suggestion you offered ...because you offered it.

I hadn't really thought about just removing the tint all together. The only thought I had was finding a way to make it work.

I sometimes get stuck on a particular outcome and you helped me to consider a different option.

Thank you.

Thanks Lenny. I haven't noticed any differences in the adhesive based on where the foil is on the sheet but I'll keep that in mind the next time I use it. Noe I'm curious to know if there is a difference.

Ffpoil looks good ,David I would leave as is.  The tint on the wind shield I don’t get the clash but that’s me"..

Thank you Carl. I agree, I don't think there's a color clash but to my eye it still doesn't look quite right. I think that's because it's a little too heavy and a bit uneven.

Hello Everybody!

It's time for another (though minor) update on the Ford Galaxie.

The foil work is mostly done. All I have left to do is the wheel arches and a little touchup here and there.

But first I'm going to clean up the residual adhesive that the foil has left behind.

David, I see you left the wipers and vent windows untouched. What are your plans for them?

I'm painting the wipers with a silver Sharpie and the vent windows with Molotow chrome.

Smart move I never could make whispers look good in foil and the vent windows are just a tuff foil..

Thanks Carl. I can remember a time when if you told someone you used a Sharpie pen to color your model car, you'd have been laughed out of the room.

:D

My, how things change.

Hello Everybody!

The work on the '65 Ford Galaxie continues!

Needing a little break from the foil work, I decided that it's about time to install the trunk hinges. Nothing tricky here, just a standard capture mechanism held in place by the interior.

65_Galaxie_73.jpg.37fa2d64047b9383378f0be14255aa98.jpg

Speaking of interiors, this car comes with a convertible styled interior. It has the large enclosures for the top mechanisms (inset). I think I want to try to hide the back seat area a little to draw attention away from these. A good way to do that would be installing some rear side windows. I've whipped up a set using some acetate and strip styrene. I'm not sure if I'll use them, most of that depends on how well they turn out.

I have a thought, David! How about dark tinted glass for the quarter glass? I have a variety of colors that I use for the occasional gasser (and a customized T-Bird)IMG_4936.jpg.5e32578a4c68d627b8904638ef1c0784.jpg I would be happy to drop a piece big enough to do all the glass in a legal size envelope and trust the USPS to get it to you hopefully before Labor Day.

Thanks Jim!

I thought about tinting the rear quarter windows but I felt if I did that I'd also have to tint the rear window. Given the trouble I was having just getting an even tint strip across the windshield, I thought I should just leave well enough alone.

Besides, tinted windows weren't really a big thing back in 1965. At least that's my rationalization :)  I have them installed and they actually look pretty good. They seem to do the job that I wanted them to.

Thanks again for the offer Jim, I do appreciate it.

That's a great looking T-Bird BTW!

Yup, I get it. What you've done looks terrific, Dave. Do I see a WWII bomber between the the cars? What might that be?

Yes you do! It's a fighter actually, the Northrop P-61.

I like to challenge myself with different build genres on occasion.
