R. Thorne Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 (edited) Started about 5 years ago building a facsimile of one of my favorite cars to watch at my local strip in Chandler, Indiana. This car was runner up to Joe Lunati at Indy in street eliminator in 1964. AMT “car culture” kit, period correct bellhousing/scattershield from double dragster kit, scratch built Traction Masters bars, wcfb Carter carbs, 4 speed from 69 Camaro kit, headers from 66 Nova kit, hood scoop from a nice gentleman on this forum (thanks again, Trevor), Tamiya rattle can paint, etc., etc. Scale 7” cheater slicks from amt “Surf Woody” (you get 4). Scratch built grill from styrene rod and “chromed” with Revell spray can (I like it). WIP site goes into more depth on these items. Comments, criticisms, suggestions, are always welcome. Oh, yes, an experiment in hand lettering (not very impressive) on the driver’s side and more conventional individual decals on the passenger side (liked those better). Edited June 26, 2024 by R. M W Elky Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 That came out really nice. I like the hand lettering side better I think I looks more like a back yard 60’s drag car that way. Really nice attention to details
Zippi Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 Can't go wrong with a Tri-Five. Just finished one up mayself. Very nice build.
echo Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 Nice effort on the car, hand lettering on a model car is difficult, nice that you did it.
TarheelRick Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 Sweet little Modified Production, everything about it fits the era very well.
R. Thorne Posted June 30, 2024 Author Posted June 30, 2024 Thanks a lot, guys. I messed up some parts of this build, but learned a little, and enjoyed myself.

And, they'll get better and better! Did you do the hand lettering on the car, or on some decal film. If the former, try getting some clear decal film, and letter on that. It's much easier than doing it on the car. That's how I did the "Conrad's" on this dragster (the "Engine Service" was done with model RR lettering from Microscale.).
Altered Ego Posted July 1, 2024 Posted July 1, 2024 This is a pretty awesome concept. I love how you did the "shoe polish" lettering on one side and the professional lettering on the other. A nice way of showing a car transition over time. Very cool and nice job!

I have some decal paper that I considered using, but my ego got in the way, as I thought I could do a good job applying to the car, instead. Wrong. The main problem was having to go over the letters as there was a lot of skipping or inconsistent flow of the pen I was using. Next time, decal paper perhaps. Thanks.

A byproduct of my always experimenting nature.

I’ve used pens on some of my lettering also and had the same inconsistent flow problem. I kinda figured the paint was glossy and to slick on a surface. We might have better control by being able to press down on the paper with a hard surface under it. I think I’m going to have to try that method out. 1

The best part about the decal film, is you can keep at it, until you're happy with it! I think I drew this with a pencil, first, then used a brush, and some One-Shot enamel. 1
