I started the strip-thread cause I think I'll have better results if I can get it back to bare plastic.

Whatever my results maybe, I'll post here for others to learn. :)

Hey mate, sorry to see that thick blue paint on it, otherwise the blue looks cool to me. It may be this kit, but as soon as I painted mine grigio silverstone, I started to dislike it. So decided to paint it rosso corsa or rosso scuderia, so it still sits in the box unfortunately.

Oh, and one more thing about the masking job you done: I think the grille part of the hood (which will be under the glass hood) is body color on the Koenig, not black like on the factory Testarossa, but correct me if I'm wrong. Even the little grille part which is mounted to the rear of the interior is body color!

I have these two pictures of the Koenig Compeition. A yellow one, which shows you maybe right, and a red one that shows the black grill in front of the windshield. As for the taillight covers, they are also color-coded.

As I plan on stripping this paint, I can redo it properly. Only mistake I made was the rear vent section that's part of the interior bucket. Can't tell from any photos what color that bit's supposed to be.

Anyway, disapointment here. It's a shame that the paint was so bad when the masking was so good.

Don't worry, I dont' like yellow and I've never had luck with it either. I got myselfe a back-up kit just in case the paint-stripping turns out horrible. Only stuff I could find was the 91% alchohol stuff and I'm soaking it in there right now. It look's like it's working, but I dont' think it's 20 minutes like that guy said in the other thread. We'll see though.

I'm unhappy with the paint-stripping results. I dont' think I want to continue with this body. I may just let it dry over night and see if I can get another good primer on it. If the primer is nice and smooth, I'll try again.

When I picked up the "Spare body kit", I also picked up Testors TS-8 Italian Red which I'll use to paint the body this time around. I think it will look good ontop of the black primer.

If the primer job turns out awefull, I'll ditch this body and use the spare kit. However, I'd be happier to save this one.

hold on a sec mate, you couldnt possibly have left that body in the paint remover long enough for it to do its thing.

i dont know what youre using for stripper but typically with super clean it takes a couple days to really work well. same with most other strippers ive used.

I wish you good luck on saving this body! I agree, I always have to wait for about a week at least to strip the paint from the body properly, so maybe it only needs more time!

Here is the interior of mine painted black/red and seatbelts added:

Nice interior! Like the way those seatbelts came out!

Here's an update.

No primer this time, just straight on the bare plastic. The paint job itselfe look's fabulous so far. Only issue is, I still got some spots under the paint from hair particles or whatever that couldn't be helped. Should probably let this dry till tomarrow before doing anything with it.

And yes..........................................I cheated. This is the spare body. I put aside the blue one for future practice.

Can't wait to see your car's body! Next you need to mount the interior on the chassis like I did mine and take a pic. Unless you dont' have the suspension installed yet.

Interior accents redone. I painted flat-red over the flat-blue. These seat belts are hard to paint precisely! I think their molded too thick to.

Also assembled the roll cage and painted it to match the body.

Are you going to do the roll cage as well? Yea you, the other Koenig builder! :)

Here's a couple of teaser shot's for yea! I have to say, it look's pretty stunning despite the tiny imperfections in the paint due to dust. This look's awesome with the Ivory White interior! I decided to golden the wheels as they really pop against the bright red. Enjoy!

Thank's, it's still a long way to go with the trimming and gluing on the windows and lenses and other bit's. Actually, your not far off on the color, Italian Red does have a bit of orange in it under certain light. If you were looking at the real model up close and personal, it's definetly more red. Sometimes the light from the camera or whatever can make it appear orange.

I also need to paint the underside as well!

Now imagine this identical finish, but in convertible version! That's the next project! However, I'll take some lesson's from this one, and make use of'em for the convertible!

hey fujimilover, old classic ferraris 1940's-70'swas painted italian red, but the change with the dino, and the 308 the red changed to rossa corsa red! its much richer and more vibrant in color. its just some use less info i have floating around in my head!

Two thing's, we're not sure EXACTLY what red Ferrari used on the 88 Testarossa, AND! We're not sure EXACTLY what red Koenig used when they modified the Testrossa. But this Tamiya Italian Red seems to do the job quite nicely! I removed the body from the chassis to paint the underside of it. Need to complete the lower skirts and the inside of the side air-intakes. Also need to paint the underside of the rear wing as well, so it's flipped over. Just waiting for the right temperature or oportunity to paint!

Then, I'll let the underside dry for a day or two, and start on the trim work.

Got a question. I plan on masking the areas where I want a nice clean line for hand-painting in the details such as the window trim, and the headlight buckets. How long should I wait for the paint to dry before sticking on the masking tape? I'm useing the 3M's blue masking tape.

I dont' want to start masking, do my trim work, remove the tape, and find out I've removed the paint as well! EEEK!

There won't be any spray painting here, I just want to mask for clean lines!

Too bad you gave up on the metallic blue direction. Then again, I'm bias towards my favorite color. :D Seriously though, the Italian Red looks killer on your Testarossa. I'm using that same red on one of my projects right now and looks red as red can be.

Thinking about hitting it with a clear coat?

Posted (edited)

After doing the trimming and decal work yes. I always clear coat over my decals!

Speaking of which, is it okay to use a Testors Model Masters Laqure clear coat over Tamiya's paints?

I personally have never tried different brand sprays over top of each other. You might want to experiment on a junk body/piece of plastic.

I spray over my decals too. Gives it that great look as part of the finish! Despite my recent tragedy when I got careless and sprayed too much on at one time and melted decals and details.

I've once clear-coated over a recent black-trim job too soon. The clear-coat caused the black to run and it ruined the finish. So, I've learned to wait a good long while for the black to dry completely, then clear coat and it turned out perfect!

I can imagine this thing really popping out at yea with all the details done, decals in place, and a good clean clear-coat! It'll be a gem for sure! Then when I'm satsified with this, onto the convertible!

Still waiting on my Koenig Diablo and Koenig 911. Hopefully, they'll arrive here Friday!

An update, sorry no pic's yet. I fixed the imperfections, gave it another coat, and I have to say WOW! This is my best paint job yet and the red look's stunning on the Koenig! I am very excited and can't wait to finish it. I'm going to wait a few day's for the paint to really cure before masking it. Reason for masking, is just to get my window trim lines as clean and straight as possible. I'd hate to start hand-painting it and get ugly wavy lines on an otherwise beautiful paint job.

I think it was well worth getting the extra kit in order to have one perfect build!

I will update pics when I get the trim work done!

Side note: The red itselfe does not need a clear coat, but I still plan on doing so anyway just to seal in the details and the decals.
