Hello -  Any chance we might see the 1963 Mercury Comet S-22 and the 1963 Pontiac Tempest LeMans Reissued?  Thanks!

These are both excellent suggestions for curb side kits. Especially the The Tempest as there could be some really cool drag options.

Comet tool is likely gone. The 63 Tempest was modified to an AWB car.

IF (and this is a big if) the Tempest AWB body tool section is still part of the original 63 Tempest kit tooling (everything else except the body) then it could be cost effective to restore or re-tool the body to a stock wheelbase. This is what happened with the 64 Cutlass kit.

If the Tempest AWB body tool section has been separated from the rest of the original 63 Tempest kit tooling, then the next best option would be to straight up clone a 63 Tempest promo to yield a curbside.

I have very casually compared some of the engine parts from a 63 Tempest with engine parts from the AMT 65 GTO and they COULD be from the same tooling. If they are then I would suspect the 63 Tempest AWB body was separated from the rest of the 63 Tempest tooling and some of that 63 Tempest tooling was used in the 64/65 Tempest/GTO kits.

Sounds Highly Plausible, given how kit tools were Mixed & Matched to yield new product to sell, back in the day. After all, it was just tooling for Kid's Toys, so what did it matter if parts of the tooling were misplaced or lost while setting up for a new run. Of course those things mattered, but having to kits to sell was the gaol at the end of the day. We have seen this exact sort of situation with other tooling from other kits.

I'm not saying that is what happened to this kit. Just that Craig's Theory makes sense.

The '64 Olds had a whole new tooling cut for the body with different top inserts for the Convertible and 442 Coupe. The original tooling still exists as the AWB Drag Convertible because that's being reissued at some point in the future. It's been part of the Round2 show display of future wares this Spring.

'63 Tempest was a completely different car (and tool) than the '64 LeMans convert/GTO HT. The '64 begat the '65 which has been flogged to this very day.

The FC was among the first to have the chrome reproduced as a fill-in to produce the kit for Model King, kinda tells me the rest of the shot was MIA.

It would be nice to see again, if the rest of the tool is in the bottom of the crate and survived the scrap drives as ownership changed.

Considering that the awb 63 Tempest has been reissued; my gut feeling is that we will be seeing the 63 Tempest in stock form in the future.  Chances are we will see it in the form as an  AMT Craftsman kit like the recently released Chevelle and 64 Olds Cutlass kits.

I appreciate that there was a significant design change between the 61-63 Tempest an the 64-65 Tempest/GTO. This includes the engine halves as the 63 326 engine does not include a transmission (rope drive with transaxle) VS the 64 326/389 engine that has a Muncie molded to it.

I remember some of the engine parts looked like they could be from the same tooling or at a minimum the same tooling design. I will take a closer look tonight at my 63 Tempest kit and my 64/65 LeMans/GTO kits.

Thanks for the informative responses.  This board is such a great wealth of information.  The reason I thought of these two cars is because I recently had a chance to visit the house where I grew up.  Right across the street - there used to be a woman who had a 1963 Pontiac Le Mans Convertible.  She would give us kids rides to and from school from time to time.  I thought of the 1963 Mercury Comet S-22 because I caught an episode of 77 Sunset Strip that featured a hardtop.  The AMT kit was a convertible snap kit that looked so sweet.  Those two plus that 1965 or 1966 Buick Skylark GS and I'd be just the happiest camper on earth.?

Again, thanks for the info guys!

Admittedly, I will buy virtually any resurrected old AMT or MPC kit that Steve G and the fine people at R2 can get to the shelves.  I’d be in on the Comet and Tempest, but perhaps even more:

’66 Skylark GS

’65-‘66 Dodge Monaco, Polara

’68-‘69 Impala

’66-‘69 Bonneville

’65 Olds 88

’65-‘66 Barracuda in stock form

’73-‘74 Charger

’72 Road Runner

’73-‘74 Challenger

’67-‘68 Galaxie

’60 El Camino and Nomad wagon

’59-‘60 Buick, Pontiac

’63-‘64 Bonneville, Grand Prix

’58 Bonneville

’59 Galaxie, Edsel

Etc… I could go on, but fear I will lose my audience…lol

Really, any and all resurrected tools that we all thought were long gone just a few years ago, are a gift!  Thanks Steve G. and Co.!!!

Of those, in my humble opinion, I'd say that the MPC '74 Charger and MPC '72 Road Runner would be the most probable reissues, then the MPC "Vette Van", MPC "Custom Corvette" (ex Mako-Shark II) and MPC Pontiac Fiero.

And since Round2 has reissued all the AMT big rigs recently (exept their Kenworth T600 and Canepa), they are left with the ERTL Internationals F-2575, F-2674 and F-4270 that haven't been reissued in a loooonnng time.

I would be tempted by any of these. But my preference is early ('60-'63) Falcon or Comet. I know a 4dr is a pipe dream, but stock or at least Ford powered (unlike the Ranchero, which I believe is a BBC).

Top on my list would be the 61 Buick bubbletop. Must've been rare even in 61. Hard to even find a photo in google.

The admins should just pin a thread to the top here that everyone can deposit their wants and suggestions for Round2 in. Same for other manufacturers, rather than having a new one pop up every week. Not saying it's not a worthwhile discussion to have.
