Knowing my luck I would glue them to one of my kits? And I'm staying away from that cutting edge, had an x-acto roll off the work bench the other night. Amazing how they always stick straight into the floor. Lucky for me it "missed by that much". Jim, you know how that usually goes. ? Oh yes. The worst thing you can do is try to stop it from hitting the floor. Just get out of the way and let it happen. You have got to fight the impulse. I'm always barefoot and a #11 surgical blade heading toward Earth @32'/sec/sec with only my foot to slow it down...not a happy ending ? customline Posted September 6, 2024 Posted September 6, 2024 (edited) Don't hold your breath, Len. BTW, do you think those four chex are imbeded in silicone bathtub caulk to pose for that photo?(the chex that I know don't behave that well ?) And incidently, I don't find any of the Chex cereals to be of the same quality since being sold off by that dog food outfit. Oh...and stay away from Boar's Head products for a while. ? That is sometimes referred to as a "Product Mix" depending on the products involved.

It killed a guy here a couple weeks ago. The irony is the guy was a Holocaust survivor and it was the liverwurst that finally killed him. Why did I go there? I've been eating that stuff (not liverwurst ?) when Wifey shops at Kroger. No more for me, thank you. I'm good. ?
ismaelg Posted September 7, 2024 Posted September 7, 2024 Hello, Love this project! Did you know that such a car actually existed? Zora built a test mule for the upcoming '63. These pictures were a test session in early '62 at Sebring. https://www.motortrend.com/features/1802-spied-1963-chevrolet-corvette-prototype-spotted-during-testing-of-cerv-i-in-1962/ Thanks, Ismael 2

I’ll have to look into that further for inspiration ?
LennyB Posted September 7, 2024 Author Posted September 7, 2024 While waiting for some more .030 half round to arrive to finish the body work I figured I would start putting the engine together. This LS is from the AMT 2017 Camaro. Looking at pics to see how to detail this puppy and to me the kit engine seems a bit bland. Wondering if there is something better I could be using. Thoughts?
customline Posted September 7, 2024 Posted September 7, 2024 You could keep it "in era" with a 409 ☺️ . I think the 327 with Rochester injection would do nicely. What sort of wheels are you planning to roll with? If you go contemporary then a late engine.... but personally, I don't like to open a hood and see the engine hidden under big plastic covers with all those pulleys and serpentine belts. I like old stuff. My $00.02.

I like old stuff. My $00.02. I guess this is a case of not wanting anything to go to waste. I know you can relate to that.? Have this 2017 Camaro kit sitting here which I've already swiped some parts from. Figured on using the engine and wheels, and even contemplated some of the suspension but that is too far off to work so that idea got trashed. I thought of going with the injected 327 which I may still go with. That would make things simple just have to find a nice injector setup in the parts bin. It would also allow me to keep the stock suspension. I'm hoping my order of Plastruct arrives tomorrow so I can make progress on the body. ?
LennyB Posted September 15, 2024 Author Posted September 15, 2024 Made some progress on the Vette. Plastruct arrived so I was able to finish the side molding. So both sides are done. Still need to do some cleanup work as the panel lines are a bit janky. One thing I'm disappointed about is I wanted to save the trim inside the side cove. But will all the body work on this one they have gotten very faint. Even tried stripping the paint back in that area but the trim is just too worn. Decided to just remove it and print up some decals to put in their place. Also, the body was missing the crest on the fender when I got it so I'm printing a few of them as well. Printing two different sizes and we shall see which one looks best. Body is getting closer to paint. Still need to figure out how I want to handle the hood and trunk hinges. The trunk uses one of those tiny metal clips. Have to dig one one of those clips up and see if it works. I would like to leave it for sentimental reasons. The front hood has pins on either side of the front edge that are meant to fit into the original inner fenders which I don't have. Have to come up with plan B. Still trying to figure out which way I want to go with the drivetrain. Think I'm going to abandon the LS engine route. Dug the original 283 out of the parts box from the MPC 57 vette kit which someone already started and found I had an unbuilt 327 engine in there as well. Started putting that together to see how it looks. The painted engine is the 283. The box art for the original 57 vette kit has a 4-barrel carb setup and I kinda like that idea. I found an intake for the 327 in the bone yard and added that on top. I think the 327 is the way to go. Thoughts? Until we meet again....
Scott8950 Posted September 16, 2024 Posted September 16, 2024 I'd go with the 327. The body turned out nice..
ismaelg Posted September 16, 2024 Posted September 16, 2024 That looks like a big block (427) not a 327. Notice the exhaust ports are evenly separated and the heads are a hint wider. However, you can't go wrong with a 427 any day....

LennyB Posted September 23, 2024 Author Posted September 23, 2024 The Vette is slowly taking shape. Did some work on the chassis. Added some ribs to the section I added behind the x-frame. Also disassembled the front suspension but in doing so the springs would not come out. I was not concerned with saving them as I want to go back to real springs the way the first release of this chassis was. So I drilled out the spring pockets to make room. Looking at reference photos online the bottom side of theses Vettes are either bare fiberglass or painted black. I decided to try and replicate the bare fiberglass look. Went over the black paint on the chassis with a tan wash. Did several coats until I got a look I wanted then sprayed the whole chassis with a matte clear. Then I added a touch of overspray from the body color. I went around in circles on what color to paint this. I originally wanted to go with a dark color, such as burgundy or dark green. But I have another project I want to do in Rootbeer, so I switched gears and decided to use the Tor Red that I did not use on the Duster project because I felt it was too orange for that one. At the bottom you can see a comparison of the two. So the Vette is painted with a combination of Chrysler and Ford paint. I used Colonial White, a '57 Ford color, for the sculpted side. Next I need to clearcoat this pair. But that will have to wait for another day. Catch ya next time.
customline Posted September 23, 2024 Posted September 23, 2024 The 'Vette looks like "Hemi Orange" to me, Len. They both look terrific from here!

Well, technically it is. In 71 Chrysler called it Hemi Orange and in 72 it was renamed Tor Red. Guess the person who ran the paint department was color blind.?
Kenmojr Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 Nice progress... For an engine, I think a 427 Z11 based on the 409 should be the powerplant.

LennyB Posted September 29, 2024 Author Posted September 29, 2024 (edited) Decided to continue working on the 427 engine. I like the look of dual carbs which was one of the options on the old 56/57 MPC Vette kit. Decided to go it one better. Got some 3D printed carbs and added to them some "Parts by Parks" 3007 air cleaners. I wanted to go with some finned valve covers and these were the only ones in my stash that fit. They will do unless I find something better. Yes, Jim, they don't have any wing nuts? Drilled out for some plug wires but I'm finding the exhaust manifolds that go along with the engine are blocking some of the plugs. Might be able to remove the webbing between the pipes or go find some headers. Still waiting for a decent day to spray the clear on the body. Rained almost all day today. Put the decals I printed on the side cove. Fingers crossed the clear plays nice with them. c'mon, I'm not that dumb, am I.?? Wasn't going to shoot the body straight off....I have a test hood that will get sprayed first. Hoping the sun will come out tomorrow.? See ya next time. Edited September 29, 2024 by LennyB
Steve H Posted September 29, 2024 Posted September 29, 2024 Very cool Corvette Len. Interesting seeing the different bodies blended together, looks like it could have been on a GM showroom floor. Good choice on the engine in my opinion. Not sure what clear you are going to use, but Tamiya TS 13 doesn’t usually play nice with decals… Cheers, Steve
Phildaupho Posted September 29, 2024 Posted September 29, 2024 Great project of a good looking Corvette. Very interesting the an actual prototype existed. With the rear end of 61 and 62 being so similar to 63-67 I wonder why GM did not continue with an opening trunk for the roadster. May have had something to do with the independent rear suspension??

Plays nice with water based paint co I would think it would be OK with water based decals. 1 hour ago, Phildaupho said: Great project of a good looking Corvette.
