Oh, noooooo... They're multiplying! '90 MUSTANG LX 5.0 - The SILVER FOX

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

As I said in my other new thread about yet another new project of yet another new Mustang, I'm battling my new Mustang addiction and so far I'm losing miserably. LOL. What else is new...?

This one is coming on the heels of the my other LX 5.0 "Stickers", which I'm building as half joke, half tribute to funny moments in my family. The other car was purposefully over the top with an outrageous body kit. This project is going to be based on the same model and with a very modified version of the same 3D printed body kit. "The 21st Century Fox" will be dialed down on the aero and more of a Grand Touring custom hot rod.

All I can say is that this Fox will be silver.

What color is the interior gonna be?

Very monotone. Everything will be something very contrasting. Orangy kinda. With some plaid. Maybe... We'll see... Not there yet. But I have somewhat of a plan. LOL

I wonder if someone will produce the non Mustang (ie the EV version) in kit form ?    Lol.

I don't know, but I can tell who would NOT be building it, not matter who makes it.

After quite a bit of sanding, the Silver Fox is ready for first coat of primer.

I decided to try something new with this one and use Duplicolor Hot Rod Black primer. This was sprayed straight from the can. It is weird how it works and how it changes during the curing process. First it would look very grey and like it's almost transparent and very wet and shiny. My first reaction was that I didn't shake the can enough. But you let it dry and it becomes very black and very smooth with this silky satin finish to it. Wait a day and it is definitely flat black. Like almost powdery chalk-like surface. I decided to shave the door handles and there were some minor imperfections, which were addressed with Tamiya putty What I liked to see was that the Tamiya putty did not eat up into the black right away. I mean it will eventually, but it shows very good solvent resistance from the primer. And it was still very fresh. That makes me confident that it will take pretty much any paint without issue. Some sanding, another coat of primer and we'll be ready for paint. I know it will be silver, but still have not decided on a particular kind of silver. So far it's a toss between Tamiya Silver Leaf and Argento Nurburgring straight from the Ferrari catalog. I really want a SILVER silver.

After some sanding, a second round of putty and some more sanding, the foxy body is ready for final primer and hopefully paint right after that.

Silver is definitely a great color on a Coupe but I’ll warn that Tamiya Silver Leaf is REALLY silver. Like 1950’s SciFi spacesuit. I use it with a flat clear to replicate cast aluminum or out of the can to replicate ceramic coat on headers and exhaust.

Look at their Mica Silver. It’s a great color. See the example below…

Thanks for all that.
I’m familiar with it. But for the look I’m after it may not be silver enough. Lol.

This is looking GREAT so far Mozzi!

By the way........the title of your thread for this car is hilarious.

Thank you, Joe.

I'm trying to have some fun too, but my sense of humor has gotten me in trouble on here before.

After quite some back and fort on color, I decided to stick to my trend of painting American hot rods in Italian exotic colors. So I am going with Ferrari Grigio Nurburgring, which is about the brightest silver in Ferrari's (or anybody else's) factory option list. I am after a particular look for this car and I need it to "glow" silver. Tamiya's Silver Leaf is just as bright. if not brighter, but it has a different finish to it. Almost like a polished bare metal. Like aluminum that has been polished out, but just not quite to mirror finish yet. And I want a car that is obviously painted in the loudest silver there is.

I sanded the primer perfectly smooth and then sprayed the body, hood and chassis. This is exactly the color I wanted, but it brought out a LOT of issues on the body, which were not visible before and some design elements, which I am not quite happy with once I saw it in color. So I am going to have to fill some spots with putty, sand the whole thing perfectly smooth, reprime it and shoot it with silver again. Oh well, plenty of other things to do all the models I am trying to finish simultaneously.

The Silver Fox got its final silver coat of Ferrari's Argento Nurburgrung and some polyurethane clear. It still needs to be buffed out and polished , but it looks really good even as is. Most of the interior was painted too. I also made some cool wheels and tires for it on my 3D printer. The wheel centers were painted with Tamiya Silver Leaf and the outer rims were painted with Revell Chrome. I couldn't help it but snap some mock up shots. You can see on the pics four other projects going on at the same time, three of which are Mustangs too.

Great looking wheels!  (I did a test with Revell chrome and haven't had the results you achieved).

I sanded the wheel barrels very lightly with 3000 grit dry. Cleaned them with Dupli-Color prep and sprayed Tamiya Fine Grey Primer straight from the spray can. After maybe an hour I sprayed Tamiya Black again straight from the spray can. Left the wheels overnight so the paint can fully dry and then sprayed the Revell Chrome straight from the spray can again. All this was done on top of a small cardboard box with masking tape afixed upside down so the rims could stick to it. Right in the open on my porch.

thanks - maybe the surface prep was my problem.

The SILVER FOX needs a foxy interior. So I set on a mission to find the foxyest color for it. This is my choice. It's a very fox like color and it is a great contrast with the silver, while it still feels kinda soft. I flocked the floor with tan color, which was the lightest I had and then sprayed it over from a greater distance to match the carpet to the rest of the interior.

Some vintage-modern Recaro seats for maintaining the civil vibe of an everyday driver, while giving  it a custom feel.

Well, it's four of them actually...

More foxy stuff to come...
