Duddly01 Posted November 21, 2024 Posted November 21, 2024 (edited) I have had good luck polishing Splash paints 2K after wet sanding with Novus 3 & Novus 2 once I have a decent shine. I do use a fairly slow rotatory tool and some Dspiae polishing pads of various hardness. I am pretty sure that cutting compound is still too gritty to get the shine you want. You've seen the outcome I get. Edited November 21, 2024 by Duddly01

Zippi Posted November 21, 2024 Author Posted November 21, 2024 Well...I started the foil work this morning and things are not going well. Not only does the Matte Aluminum bmf not match the color I painted the bright work it doesn't want to stick very well. Also, I'm not getting straight cut lines. My eye sight and shaking hand are the culprit. I'm starting to loose interest in this build because of these issues. 1

I Bob, I have found the adhesive on BMF to be inconsistent, even on the same sheet. If you have enough on the sheet, you could try taking from another area on the sheet. Better yet, if you have a sheet of the "new improved chrome" (which is not new at all, they just call it that) you may have a better time with that. I actually like foiling but I need to be in the right frame of mind because of the same situation you described. My hands hurt all the time and my filmy left eye drives me crazy. Take a break from it. This build is way too nice to go back in the box. 4
BK9300 Posted November 21, 2024 Posted November 21, 2024 I agree with Jim about not putting it back in the box - very nice job so far! If you are considering alternatives, I find Hasegawa foils to have good adhesion, however, their products are more expensive for less quantity than BMF. Works well, though! 2

It's not going back in the box. The bmf is sticking just not as good as the bright chrome I have especially around corners. I just get frustrated when the work I do doesn't go as planned.
Andrew McD Posted November 21, 2024 Posted November 21, 2024 Man I hear ya' on the frustration when things don't go as planned! Some builds fight me at every move. Actually it seems that most of them do that! It is particularly frustrating when tools or materials (such as the BMF) don't work as advertised. I suppose if it were easy everybody would be building show stoppers. Having followed a few of your builds I don't doubt you'll resolve the issues and get through this one too. Despite the frustration your BMF work looks great in the photos.

Got a set from HF years ago that is now falling apart but they don't sell it anymore.☹

customline Posted November 22, 2024 Posted November 22, 2024 This is what I use and I'm very happy with it. Its an Excel product "MagniVisor" it has 2 levels of magnification (I discarded the loupe). It's light and, even for my fat head, it's quite comfortable ( I sometimes forget I'm wearing it. 🥴 ) $22 on Amazon. 1

I started with the hood starting a 3600 then 4000, 6000, 8000, then 12000. I'm at a lose as to what happened. It has lost it's shine and took on a dull look. I used some Meguiar's cutting compound and liquid wax and it did not help. Now I'm in a pickle. I use the Meguires Fine Cut cleaner but it will leave a slightly dull finish. I follow that with their Swirl Remover before I apply a wax. You'll note the scale on the bottle, fine cut is a five and Swirl remover a three. The lower the number the smoother the finish. 1

I hear ya Lenny. This is what I used.
Zippi Posted November 23, 2024 Author Posted November 23, 2024 Well...I decided to just polish, polish, and polish some more on the hood. I was going to strip the wax off the hood and re-shoot a coat of clear but I was afraid I'd mess it up. If you fellows remember a while back the whole community was having issues with the bmf not sticking and tearing due to the company changing vendors. Well, I think I got an old sheet of the Matte Aluminum bmf from my local hobby shop because this bmf did not want to stick and it would tear really easy. I'm going to have to go back over the body and see if I can patch some pieces in where it doesn't look all that great. 3
LennyB Posted November 23, 2024 Posted November 23, 2024 I try to by the BMF direct from them. Recently they were out of stock on the new improved chrome so I had to buy it elsewhere. I hope this doesn’t mean they have to make a new batch, if so I hope the adhesive is good. Just bought some matte aluminum from them direct but haven’t used it yet.

I think they be having issues again.
