I’ve been itching to get at this one ever since I picked it up this summer. All comments, criticism, or advice welcome as always.?IMG_5315.thumb.jpeg.61a07899ebac323f6294f4c20ac46cf7.jpeg

I decided it needed a bit of an angle chop, so I made a tape pattern and sprayed some black primer on to mark the cuts.

It didn’t take long to realize that there was no way I was going to be able to get those doors looking and operating well.?I mean where do you draw the line between determination and insanity?? So I made a pattern and clad the entire inner sides with a layer of .015” Evergreen sheet and glued it in with Tamiya extra thin.IMG_5205.thumb.jpeg.86efe0ec824a6d04b62ac9965197545a.jpeg

I drilled the visor just because I like that look, and countersunk the backside so it doesn’t look too thick at the holes. Then I slathered on some Milliput since there was a bit of a dip at the back edge of the doors. While I was at it I filled the ejector pin marks on the interior and the transition between the Evergreen sheet and the body.

A bit of sanding and it looks more like what I’m looking for.IMG_5257.thumb.jpeg.29621a2e12be025de52617b5dc79b0a6.jpeg

I re-scribed the doors and moved the door line forward slightly and added a bit of thickness to the window frame.IMG_5265.thumb.jpeg.2714034519edf3f67dc2fdb4da435b2c.jpeg

I wanted to add some stiffening ribs to the roof, so I made a pattern on tape so they are not all parallel on the slightly wedge shaped roof. I cut 1/8” wide strips from .015” sheet and glued them in place. I got a little over zealous sanding them down on my first attempt, so I wound up scraping them off.?IMG_5225.thumb.jpeg.d5945db316f3d0f2a545da0fbe510d29.jpeg

IMG_5325.thumb.jpeg.e4b543e89424042cdf0b3eab8f3e55f4.jpeg

This time I laid down three layers of Tamiya tape between the ribs and sanded them all down to that level, then reduced it to two layers of tape.IMG_5345.thumb.jpeg.2410cce012cc271cdfc02b06169863ca.jpeg

To get rid of the “glued on” look, I painted all the edges with a few coats of Tamiya grey primer (in the square bottles). When dry I sanded away most of the primer, making a smooth transition between roof and rib, giving more of a stamped appearance. That’s all for now until I figure out what I am doing for a drivetrain.?

And one rough mockup photo. I don’t think the Viper engine is staying though?

Looking good! Where are those wheels from?

Thanks Guys! The wheels are from the Revell ‘37 Ford pickup.

Oh, yeah, the wheels - I really like them for early hot rods. I'm not too keen on how they make the attachment to the axles ( unless you use the kit axles too)  but those wheels are recognizable for what they are - they're pretty cool.  I'm really liking this one, boss!

Thanks Jim. The wheels are actually going to be resin copies that I’ve made, so I’m doing my own mounting system.?

I finally figured out what to do with the front axle on this one. I want to lower it substantially, but I don’t like the typical scarily raised suicide mount system. I found a great 1:1 project online that I more or less copied. I started making some wishbones, then discovered that I had some from a Revell ‘29A that would only need a bit of modification. I still might use my scratch built ones. I think It’s low enough now in the front and I just need to raise the rear a touch to get a neutral or very slight positive rake. Pics tell the story.

Looking good Greg, are you going with the Viper engine?

Thanks Carl ! Nope the Viper was just too much engine. I raised the front crossmember level with the top of the frame. It sits pretty close to level now.

I had to do a double take on that front axle wondering what was holding it up.  Then I saw the spring behind it, neat idea.

I got the idea from a build on jalopy journal. I like it because it keeps the spring mounted lower. It looks more structurally sound than the high mount in my mind. Whether it is better in the real world or not I don’t know…but it works for me…I think, and I definitely won’t be doing any panic stops..?

It is looking good! I got a little scared when I saw the putty job!!!!

Those custom wheels are something else! Kinda like solid wooden spokes!
