David G. Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 I think the only bumper I don't like is the high-boy style one. It's the only one that doesn't seem to fit with the body style. I've always been a fan of overriders but I'm not sure they work all that well with this car's shape. They're okay but they'll need to be paired with the proper grille and I haven't seen any good matches in the photos presented. In the end, stuff like this is a matter of consensus of opinion. Now you have my opinion from which to start building the consensus! Although.... maybe the overriders will work with the "big tooth" grille... hmmmm... 🤔 David G.

It just so happens, Dave, I took these shots, just now, of the '54 Desoto unit with 2 different bumpers 👇

Okay, so now the high-boy bumper has something with which it works. Is there such a thing as too many options? =D-
NOBLNG Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 I wonder how the Desoto grill would look mounted upside down with the last bumper option?😈 1

Is there such a thing as too many options? =D- Yes there is, David, but not in this situation. This is my second favorite automotive subject. The early '50s lead sled is both a platform for one's imagination but also one for imitation. It's a genre like rock & roll or science fiction, firmly imbedded in American car culture (ooo...that was kinda philosophical 😂). I'm throwing it all at the wall to see what sticks. Having some interested eyes on this thing will help me make a decision, David, and every opinion is valuable.

It doesn't sit in the opening well enough to look right. The shape of the "teeth", upside-down, doesn't work. I'll try it again and put up a photo later. Maybe I was too quick to judge.

Greg may have something, Dennis, I'm open to taking another look. This project is a sort of testing ground. The kit provided some good choices and I had some in stock also. What I didn't have was a solid plan. I didn't plan on bumpers but y'all sorta pushed me in that direction. I have another rear bumper to try. It's much lighter looking than the Del Rey unit and I'm hoping for success with that. It will be a cleaner look and it may help to decide on the front treatment. Thanks for helping!
LennyB Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 I like this one even without the gold tooth. But I would recess it a bit more if that's possible. Don't like the toes sticking out as far as they do.

I guess it's time for a pedicure 🦶😕 No, actually it goes in more, I just didn't want to push it in. It's resin and I don't want to break it. I guess I could sand the bottom a bit more, get rid of the calluses 😏

From what I've read on this forum, the Revell chrome paint is only just a little better than more reasonably priced chrome paints. I've had success with Alclad and will use it up before trying anything else. I wasn't serious about actually buying that stuff. Maybe some day when my dementia kicks in. 1

I painted the bumpers of my Vette with the Revell. Hard to get a good pic of it. Although now I see I got some dust specs in it that I can't see with the naked eye.😫 I'm avoiding touching them until I need to install them as we've all heard how 'sensitive' it can be.

I looks pretty good and It's a time saver, for sure. You can probably seal it but, of course, it will affect the brilliance. Handle them with tweezers till you're ready to install them. I wonder if anyone has decanted it for airbrush yet. That would maybe get more mileage from that little can. Less wasted, right? But there goes the convenience 😕. I dunno, Len.

Then I did a wash over them. So by comparison they are duller for multiple reasons.
customline Posted December 20, 2024 Author Posted December 20, 2024 They look like the stainless steel they're supposed to be. Nice work. I recall you cast some of these. I tried it. Not for me.

Bought one on eBay but the seller couldn’t find it after the sale. Have a 67 T-Bird wheel which is very close. Gonna try to clone that. 🤞

customline Posted December 21, 2024 Author Posted December 21, 2024 As promised, I turned the '54 Desoto smile upside-down. 👁👇 Granted, it's not perfectly placed. Drilling the perfectly placed holes isn't easy. That sounds like an excuse though. 😔 1
customline Posted December 21, 2024 Author Posted December 21, 2024 And now for something completely different. You may recognize my next victim as the rear bumper from the AMT/Lindberg '53 Ford kit. The overriders needed removal. I figured that process would naturally narrow the bumper more than enough so I would be left with two ends and a center section to be rejoined. Then I would need to fill the two gaps. I bonded the bottom of the three pieces to a sheet of .020 while set in place against the body. I then glued a length of .060 half-round to the inside of the bumper parts and reinforced with more thick CA, partially filling the two gaps. Afterward, I removed the sheet foundation and work will continue on filling and shaping and sanding. In the last photo, I have added a piece of .010 sheet to the top of the bumper that will be shaped to match the contour of the rolled pan. That's all for now. Thanks for your interest. 1
David G. Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 Given the effort going into this rear bumper, I'm guessing that it'll be the one? David G.
LennyB Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 Good process on the bumper, I think that should work good. But the overrides might get pissed you cut them out, I hear they’re a mean group of bikers🚳
