I received this kit for Christmas. I popped it open and was going through thru the instructions and realized that this is a curbside kit (no engine)!!!
The first thing I thought was i will just put one in it but on looking further this might be a conversion that is over my head. cab mounts, hood hinge, engine installation, etc.

I did Ace’s search method and found nothing on this conversion. I did find engine candidate s.

If anyone has done this conversion, pictures and descriptions would be very helpful. Over al tips, tricks and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

It's unfortunate Italeri didn't do the extra work to put in an engine, it lets down an otherwise good kit.
I don't think anyone has done a conversion kit for this so you have to do it yourself as you might have realized and finding and put in an engine is the easiest part.
The Volvo VN (L) is not available with many engine options as far as I know, their own D13 wich also can be found in MACK as the MP8, the D11 and Cummins X15, earlier you could get one with engines from Cat, Cummins, Detroit and of course Volvo.
I have two of the Volvo VN kits and have plans to do this myself but I have not tackled the problem yet.

I’ve seen a few guys on FB put an engine in it, and I’ve got plans to eventually do it myself.

Depending on the extent of detail and accuracy you’re after, hinging the hood, cutting out lower engine portion that’s molded into the chassis, and installing an engine is your basic job.

If you’re wanting to go further, you’d need to scratch build the air intake system (I plan to use a modified  under hood cleaner from an Ltl 9000) along with the duct work on the underside of the hood, and modifying the firewall to fit the engine and to look more realistic. Other under-hood components, like coolant and washer reservoirs, steering shaft, etc, could be added as well.

For the engine choice, a widely-available Italeri Detroit Series 60 would be a good choice for the 2004 model the kit represents. An A&N resin Cummins ISX 15 would also be a good choice for the next few model years. For a late model, A&N also has a Volvo D13TC engine, and that would work if the truck is from the 2017 model year. Though, the VNL’s from 2015-17 had a slightly different bumper, updated mirrors, and fairings. In 2018, the VNL was updated quite a lot, beyond what the kit can easily represent.IMG_9617.jpeg.ff7b32fc12534c6dae258f5c12715e58.jpegIMG_9616.jpeg.31bcccfbe636974642e02b861c629f8e.jpegIMG_9615.jpeg.c86bd1012827f5ae56adba07beeed6ec.jpegIMG_9614.jpeg.2630228c097024cddf66aef30d205b0d.jpegIMG_0090.thumb.png.1fbb67d482cfa30e23e70d7c495c3282.png
