Hi everyone! I am currently encountering some problems when I used Tamiya Surface Primer Gray for a base color of Tamiya Pearl White (TS-45) for my Aoshima kit. I sprayed the TS-45 in a light mist coat on the body with the gray primer but the white color didn’t appear, only the gray color from the primer is visible. After waiting for 15 mins, I applied the 2nd coat (heavy) of the Pearl White spray can to see if the white color will appear this time, but it still remains the same. I also noticed that there were uneven painted areas and paint bubbles after spraying the body with the base color. Should I sand it down and redo the painting process? Any help and suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thank you very much!

How long did you let the primer coat cure?

Where the bubbles occurred may have been paint or primer build up.

Like stichdup mentioned, you need a base for pearls.

As Les stated, Tamiya Pearl White is particularly transparent, more so than some of their other Pearl Colours. I did the body of my Mini TS-60 Pearl Green. The roof, which was a separate piece was TS-45 Pearl White. Both colours were over Tamiya Gray Primer. I had to shoot multiple coats of the Pearl White, 3 to 4, to get what I was reasonably happy with. I would start with a sanding, especially in the areas with bubbling. I would then reprime with Tamiya Fine White Primer, and finish off with the Pearl White.

It’s best to wash the body before primer also with soap and water or a mild abrasive like Comet in order to get rid of any mold release that may be present.

Tamiya pearl white is very translucent. Tamiya White Base in a (small) rattle can is amazing, it covers much better than their fine white rattle can primer. It would be perfect under pearl white. It dries to a nice, semigloss/satin finish. So smooth too. It allows painting a variety of molded plastic colors to all have the same base color of white so you don't have variations in color, especially on a body.

Bubbles are from spraying too close to the model. I learned this the hard way years ago. Pull back a bit, and resist trying to flood the model too quickly for gloss. Tamiya rattle cans are best used in several steps of fine mist coats allowed to dry a few minute between coats, only applying wetter coats near the end. It self-levels quite nicely, when you hit the sweet spot the paint is very, very smooth. Takes a bit of practice, but worth it.

I let it dry for at least 15 mins.
