IMHO, social media is pretty much a wasteland, but Facebook seems determined to reach the bottom before anyone else. I’m all for freedom of speech. If someone wants to waste free bandwidth, more power to them. But there is no need to put their garbage in everyone’s feed. I was in lots of special interest groups, but the nonstop stream of garbage outweighed the good things. It will free up time for building models.

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

I get garbage on my feed all the time, but I rarely get people posting anything weird on my page.

In either case, I just delete and block.

No big deal.

That said, I almost never even look at my feed anyway.

I’ve known right from the beginning that it was mostly trash and ads.

Why bother?

My wife had a bad experience with it due to a sister on the opposite side of the political spectrum. After hearing all about it. I refrained from every joining Faceplant. I have never been a fan of unfiltered propaganda. I have better things to do with my time.

I had a FB account for about three days........... It seems people get mad if you don't follow them there. and Lord help us if there is an 'unfollow'!

I've had IG for about five years now, sooooo much better than the FB experience.

I was off it for almost 6 years. I will go on very quietly now. I don't friend just anyone. I steer clear of politics and any bickering.

You did the right thing........

FaceSpace does so much stuff underhand and profit of your data it's unreal. Look at the huge profits.

Never been on never will

Good for you.

I've never felt the need to waste my time on Facebook or any other social media sights although I do enjoy using YouTube for exploring modeling content.

Just like the 99.9% of what's on television is complete trash.

Just view what you want to see and avoid the rest.

Not going to throw my T.V. into the burn pile because of "The Masked Singer". ;)

Wow. Just as I was about to take a hammer to all my computers because I don't like Fakeborg.

Whew. That was close.

Never had a desire to become part of the herd⁹. My entire social media presence is this forum. As others have said, I have better things to do with my time.

I haven’t had a Facebook account for several years now. I really do miss some of the model groups on there, but that’s about it.

IMO, a lot of people have a real problem with the social media thing. Especially when someone has a different opinion as they do. It’s funny to think that in this day and age, someone can argue with someone that lives on the other side of the country, that they don’t even personally know. Doesn’t make any sense to me. I’ve been thinking for a while now, that the smart phone and social media was brought about too quickly for some folks, and they just don’t have the maturity to handle it all.

Good points.

One problem is people refuse to agree to disagree and let the subject go. They also says thins that if you said to the face of the other person you'd be missing a few teeth. Finally there seems to be a totally unwillingness to be civil towards others.

I suppose you could say that I like to keep all of my options open, and information is a good thing, no matter where you find it.

I’ve learned a few modeling tricks and techniques in the Facebook modeling groups that I’ve never even heard of within this forum.

I’ll take it where I can get it.

I’m a big boy and capable of managing my participation on a social media platform.

It is what you make of it.

Never been a fan of social media,  never had a Facebook. I've always viewed it as the high school lunch room gossip table. From my late teens and even to today, I still hear people moan and gripe over what so and so said on Facebook,  I tend to immediately tune out the rest of the conversation. I guess some dont mature. Don't get me wrong,  beautiful idea being able to keep touch with people, advertise business and such, but like a lot of great ideas,  horribly misused and abused in practice. Good for you "cutting it loose".

I'm not sure who's more insufferable, those who for years kept telling me to join FB, or those riding their high horse against it in every thread it gets mentioned in passing (as often happens on other hobby boards).  And for those who don't "do social media", forums such as this one and Spotlight are part of social media.

I joined FB in 2019 in part to join my model club's group.  Info regarding meetings had been posted there.  Unfortunately, I joined too late.  The group was in decline, and the club folded later.  The group got rebranded to reflect the change in the club, but it's pretty dead now.  There is a lot of politics and kvetching on FB in general, but there was a lot of that every month in my club meetings.  You can scroll past an offensive post, but in real life you can't.

It's interesting how quiet my FB friends have become over the years.  I rarely post to my feed myself these days as well.  However it's been great to reconnect with Ken Hemilton, who's still at it making great dioramas.

One of the groups I belong to is of my hometown.  From time to time I post pictures that I've taken around here since the 1980s.  It's been gratifying to see the overwhelming (positive) response, sparking happy memories and conversation.  My town just got through some toxic political business, so I'm glad I could spread a little happiness the past few days.

Sure there's a lot of junk of FB, but thankfully, there are a lot of fun cat videos to counter it.  😄

Kidding, SM can definitely be a wasteland....

If I deleted mine. I'd never hear from my family. It's either through Facebook or texting. Which with Raynaud's disease. Texting on a phone is next to impossible. I can't even work the screen at the car wash. An attendant has to come and do it for me.
