Makes me think about building a steel-roofed steel garage with a 10,000 gallon rain-capture cistern and a couple of decent sized pumps...

EDIT: with directable spray nozzles, and gravel or concrete for at least 20 yards in every direction

I really hope that all the cars destroyed in the fires, particularly the vintage and classics, don't get automatically crushed by the insurance companies as total-losses.

Even a car in a quite hot fire can yield hard-to-find parts that are made of ferrous metals that will survive...like engine blocks, crankshafts, gearbox housings and internals, etc.

Sadly, many of the news coverages I have seen on TV show many vehicles that have been burned. More than a few interesting older cars and trucks along with several that you can tell they were of a special interest type prior to the fire.

I remember just watching some part of a documentary, I think it was called ice on fire; anyway there was a scene where they showed a city that had been on fire and there was the scorched shell of a 1967 or 68 mustang fastback. Very disturbing.

And then you have this in Malibu:

I think we might have a "moon landing" shot there.   ;)

Check out the direction of the shadow from the bugbus relative to the rest...

It was on the AP website, allegedly taken by Mark J. Terrill of the AP from a helicopter. The woman who owns it didn't lose her apartment either (allegedly again).

Stranger things have happened....

Yup, there's a photo floating around of a '58 T-bird with no damage, sitting in the middle of burned-out desolation.
