TheBEAUMONTGURU Posted January 16 Posted January 16 As usual i forget to take pictures of WIP, so this one goes straight into the done pile. Lots of work to modify the original kit to more accurately represent Bob Gliddens T-bird. I added the extra cage around the driver, cut off the head rests that said Don Hardy, since this car is a Jerry Haas prep'd unit. I built the valve covers from sheet plastic to make them look like welded aluminum and split the 1150 dominators in 1/2 as his IHRA prepped car was equiped. Made a few missing decals, sanded down the tires really good, painted with duplicolor autostore paint, no clear, just polishing. I used an original issue of the kit, but used the decals from the reissue from a few years back. all wired and plumbed, used 11/0 seed beads for the fittings, reconfigured all the oil tanks and lines, added an electric fan, made new rad hoses, and generally changed alot of the engine bay to better represent the real car. Scratch built some of the MSD parts, wired the MSD 7AL box in the interior, made a window net from fiberglass window screen and seatbelt ribbon. 11
TheBEAUMONTGURU Posted January 16 Author Posted January 16 i found a coupe crappy WIP pics with some parts along with a funny car i was working on at the same time, doesnt show too much but you can see some of the mods between the more stock kit engine and my welded valve covers and seat mods. 6
dragcarz Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Beautiful build! I love the detail. I’ve been trying to step up my detailing, fuel lines and carb linkage still evade my skill level. Really nice work DA. 1
Zippi Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Man oh man...I gotta tell ya DA, Bob Glidden was my boy back in the day. Just loved to watch him race, specially Warren Johnson. Great detail work in the business end. Just an overall Fantastic looking build. Now I'm going to be on the lookout for this kit. 1 1
TarheelRick Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Excellent work, some really meticulous detailing. I would say beautiful, but in my simple mind, all Fords are beautiful. I guess this one is beautifuler. I know that is not a real word, but it depicts my thoughts of this build. 1
R. Thorne Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Nice!! Your wiring work (especially the MSD) is off the scale. I can’t think of a better person to pay homage to. 1
Mike 1017 Posted January 17 Posted January 17 Fantastic build. Being a Ford guy the Motocraft livery is my favorite. Winston Cup and NHRA Mike 1
Nitro330 Posted January 17 Posted January 17 Great upgrades from the original kit! Looks awesome. Love the split dominators and the detailing. A very cool build. 1
M W Elky Posted January 18 Posted January 18 This is my hands down favorite Bob Glidden car . We were a mostly ford family in 1987 I had just got my first car a 64 Galaxie my dad drove a 56 f-100 and my mom had a 78 T-Bird. We kept motorcraft F-1A oil filters in stock. Always a Glidden fan 1
Maurice Henderson Posted January 18 Posted January 18 My friend, this is one of the best Bob Glidden builds I have ever seen...Your detail is on point..Especially the spitting of the 1150 Dominators..Back then in Pro Stock, engine builders would cut them in half and place them closer to the runners to work like fuel injection with the intake runners. David Reher of Reher & Morrison Pro Stock fame told me this.I work on my buddy Keith Raftery NHRA Top Sportsman 68 Nitrous & 2021 Procharger Camaro.. Reher & Morrison freshens our 784 & 862 Nitrous motors..Your paint is outstanding and overall model is phenomenal..Mad Dog was the man is Pro Stock, but I'm a WJ fan..You sir hit it out the park on this build..Job well done. 1
TheBEAUMONTGURU Posted January 18 Author Posted January 18 Thank you so much to everyone who commented. It really means a lot to me. I must have built this kit 3 times when i was a little kid, Glidden has been my favorite driver for sure, managed to get his autograph a couple times at the Brainerd events. Its funny, i'm not a ford guy at all, but when i was a little kid, Glidden was my idol for some reason. I'm so happy to finally build a "good" version that doesn't look like it was built by a 10 year old! i have both his chief cars in the works as well. stay tuned!
Mopar2 Posted January 19 Posted January 19 Here is mine...It can't even compare to your awesome detail. 1
Steve H Posted January 21 Posted January 21 Beautiful build David, and very nicely detailed. Did you lower the ride height a bit? Looks perfect. I always loved these cars as pro stocks. Still have 2 of these in the stash. My favourite part of this kit is the Pro Star wheels, love em. I can’t understand why these wheels have not found their way into other kits… 1
John B. Posted January 21 Posted January 21 According to Mr. Glidden himself, his 1987 Thunderbird was his favorite race car. Out of 14 NHRA national events, it qualified #1 12 times! It also won the NHRA world championship that year. You, sir, have done him proud! 1
