iamsuperdan Posted January 25 Posted January 25 Just once, could someone please discuss the DeLorean without mentioning the movie? Seriously. 3 2
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 25 Posted January 25 (edited) 1 hour ago, iamsuperdan said: Just once, could someone please discuss the DeLorean without mentioning the movie? Seriously. Sure. They're kinda horrible cars. I'm finishing up a complete rewire on one now, including a full custom instrument panel, and even if it hadn't been previously mangled by chimps, the OEM wiring would be almost as bad. They don't make much power for the complexity of the engine, and they're kinda tail-happy due to being rear-engined (65% rear weight bias, where a comparable 911 is around 60%) rather than the originally proposed mid-engined. They're prone to overheating and a wide variety of other failure modes. The urethane bumpers get warpy and wavy over time, and the bodies are almost impossible to repair and have the repair be undetectable. On the positive side, the fiberglass structure and stainless steel skins don't rust, the Lotus-designed suspension works about as well as anyone could ask (from a handling standpoint), and they look cool. How's that? Edited January 25 by Ace-Garageguy 3 1

Well the only reason there's a factory stock version of a DMC-12 is because Aoshima decided to start from scratch and make a new kit of the BttF movie car. Part 1 and Part 2 kits have been released with Part 3 coming in March. 2

I didnt mention the movies in my build review video I did for it, and I didnt mention the movies at all in the unboxing video for it in September, does that make you feel a bit better now? Edit, I did mention it one time, but it was saying the chassis plate was the as the movie version of the kit and not stock. Edited January 26 by martinfan5 1

It's probably not gonna happen. considering there are only 5 things this cat is known for One of the most recognizable movie car in the world John and his Cocaine deal on camera Poor build quality Severely underpowered gull-wing doors Either way, I will be buying this kit for sure. 5

Adam is correct. No, BTTF, no DeLorean. It would not have even been kitted, I'd wager. But now there are at least 7 or 8 versions of the kit. The Older ones from the 1990's, and these new ones. I get 8 versions this way: 1. Old Stock 2. Old BTTF #1. 3. Old BTTF #2 4. Old BTTF #3 5-8 are the same Four versions of the new tooling. I will admit, my math be be incorrect. 1

The Aoshima (and reboxed as AMT) only came as the three movie cars. The Polar Lights Snap Kits are the same way. This new Aoshima kit (based on the newly tooled movie cars) is the first and only time a stock DeLorean has been kitted. All American offered a stock resin one way back in the day, but it's pretty oddly proportioned compared to the plastic kit. 1
TonyK Posted January 26 Posted January 26 I still remember seeing one of these at an All British Field Meet and I wasn't impressed. The owner was very friendly and had everything opened and talked to us about it.
Jordan White Posted January 26 Posted January 26 I will say, using the sound of a Porsche 928 engine in the movies was a good choice!
jaymcminn Posted January 26 Posted January 26 18 hours ago, iamsuperdan said: Just once, could someone please discuss the DeLorean without mentioning the movie? Seriously. As a child of the 80s who was hyper-aware of cars, especially weird foreign ones, I loved the DMC-12 well before the movies came out. I still do, even knowing everything about them that I know now (Adam left out the screwy deal with the British government that resulted in the cars being built in Northern Ireland as an attempt to quell rebellion through economic investment; it, umm, didn't go well). Honestly, the BTTF movies probably saved the DMC-12 from total automotive obscurity. The reason so many of them haven't been turned into refrigerators and dishwashers is because the movie moved what would have been a minor, if especially pretty, footnote in automotive history into broader popular culture. Discussing the DeLorean without discussing BTTF is like discussing Lincoln without mentioning the Civil War. They're inextricably linked. 3
thatz4u Posted January 26 Posted January 26 original design called for Chevy V-8, deal with GM went toes up...
John M. Posted January 26 Posted January 26 It was great to see a stock DeLorean out in kit form instead of Doc Emmett Brown's version.
Sport Suburban Posted January 27 Posted January 27 I'm interested in this kit even though I have the resin body for the other kits. Here is what I got for you to see.

Thank You, James for correcting my memory. I thought there had been a Stock kit. I was wrong. I'm glad your memory is better than mine. 1
Mark C. Posted January 27 Posted January 27 Any ideas on how to replicate the brushed stainless steel finish on a plastic model?

Mark C. Posted January 28 Posted January 28 Interesting suggestion… I was wondering if that would be the best way to go about it. Have you tried this before?
Justin Porter Posted January 28 Posted January 28 Having got the stock DMC-12's in at Haven, I definitely have some thoughts on them! Going through the box shows a very thoughtfully designed kit that really will be a showstopper if built in a tidy fashion. I'm particularly glad that Aoshima included the engine uppers because the unfairly maligned PRV deserves to be captured in plastic. After all, the combination of the PRV V6, a fiberglass body, and a rear-engine spaceframe chassis gave us one of France's all-time greatest sports cars!

You’re not kidding… though not weighing it down with pointless stainless steel cladding over the perfectly serviceable fibreglass body probably helped… Actually, being Alpine, just not weighing it down full stop. best, M. 1

I haven’t tried it on a Delorean, but I have a few BTTF kits in the stash so I’ve been messing with that exact technique - see this post here for an example: I didn’t quite master it yet, but I’m getting closer…
