Jürgen M. Posted July 17 Posted July 17 Another fine build, Gary! That KW is gonna look great when it's finished! It already does! And your new bench will surely make building even more of a pleasure! 2
Randy D Posted August 5 Posted August 5 New bench area looks great Gary. Always enjoy your builds! Randy 1
Gary Chastain Posted August 5 Author Posted August 5 Finally got the bench done and all organized (well mostly, I keep seeing more to organize) so getting some bench time. Couple changes to this build and keeping with the mild custom vision. First I decided to use the stretched frame that I built first. Second is the rear fenders. I purchased a set of 3d printed fenders but they are warped and seem to not be able to straighten them, so I modified them for this truck by removing the center piece that was warped. You can see the warpage on the uncut fender. I think this will work. 3
BK9300 Posted August 5 Posted August 5 Looks good either way, Gary! If you wanted to keep the look of the center piece, any chance of using the piece you cut off as a pattern for one from styrene? 1
Biggu Posted August 5 Posted August 5 That cut turned out perfectly. And I think Brian has a good idea should you change your mind down the road. From my seat in the theatre the cutting makes the whole thing look less restricted. I like this. And it will be killer when completed

Oh I am sure that would be easy enough to do, also considered glueing a brace from the bottom of the center portion back to the opposing underside to pull the warpage out. I have seen that brace on trucks before. But the warpage was in two planes to challenge the brace idea. 1
Gary Chastain Posted August 5 Author Posted August 5 Got a rear light bar made up and will also be attachment point for the rear fenders in the rear. mockup for fit. 4
Gary Chastain Posted August 5 Author Posted August 5 Using 1/4 aluminum tubing (6.25 scale inches) , got the bends correct without flat siding the tubing. Got the crossover tube made, now to make the frame hangers and must clear the driveshaft and tank mounts. 5
Gary Chastain Posted Wednesday at 08:26 PM Author Posted Wednesday at 08:26 PM Built a headache rack today, but not sure I like it. Look at it in the morning to see if I want to continue or start over. 5
meechum68 Posted Wednesday at 11:44 PM Posted Wednesday at 11:44 PM Work of art in progress! I love the rear wheel wells! Those are slick! I am a sucker for that style as well on the stuff I see on a day to day basis!!
Gary Chastain Posted Thursday at 05:08 PM Author Posted Thursday at 05:08 PM Few changes this morning, but going with this design for a headache rack. Little bit of cleanup and off to primer. 5
Gary Chastain Posted Thursday at 06:18 PM Author Posted Thursday at 06:18 PM Did a quick mock-up to find a new problem to solve. I purchased these after market battery boxes from Truck builders model forum and they have good detail, so I want to use them but as you can see the exhaust mounting holes are not in the correct place, so need to plug those four holes and make exhaust mounts off the back of the cab. Will switch to Auslowe exhaust, which was the original plan. I can still move the fuel tanks back a bit for exhaust clearance 2

Gary Chastain Posted Thursday at 08:10 PM Author Posted Thursday at 08:10 PM Did some experimenting with an exhaust mount. Problem is cab tapers in on the sides and rear tapers forward. Think I could use 123 blocks to keep them square. Think on it tonight to see if any other idea comes up. 3
BK9300 Posted Thursday at 09:22 PM Posted Thursday at 09:22 PM Geez, always problems to solve - looks well in hand, though! 3
Scott Eriksen Posted Thursday at 11:46 PM Posted Thursday at 11:46 PM The truck looks better with those fenders Gary ,,,more show truck style 2

Gary Chastain Posted Friday at 06:59 PM Author Posted Friday at 06:59 PM I am going with these mounts for the exhaust, got the square. Holes plugged where the exhaust was to be mounted. Now remove crappy molded in wipers, some cleanup on the cab and ready for primer. 2
Biggu Posted Friday at 08:32 PM Posted Friday at 08:32 PM I am lovin this ! Perfect stack brackets. 1

This view shows both of mine after sanding. This shows were I sanded. Each side sanded down to 0.032" thick. Now they look more realistic. I'll replace the bolt head detail before I paint them.
