This is the attempt of Mercury to offer a cheap stripped model below the Custom. The 1956 Mercury Medalist was offered as a two-door sedan, four door sedan, two-door and four-door pillarless hardtop. Compared to the Custom  the medalist lacks the bumper guards and less chrome applications. Standard powertrain was a210 hp  312 cui Y block with a three speed manual transmission.  It looked more like a a Ford Fairlane than a Mercury. The customers didn't like it and the sales  rate was low therefore the Medalist was dropped from the line in 1957.
