Hello there. Well, it is time for another Koenig model! I've already done the Ferrari Competition, Mercedes 500 SL, and now just finished the Porsche 928. So, it is time to do the fourth make, the Lamborghini Diablo by Koenig Specials.

DSC09308.jpg

This kit is a very interesting kit indeed. Except for being all plastic, it will remind you of building those quick die-cast model kit's that you bolt together. This kit has alot of color-molded parts and alot of screws. It also has several stickers as well. So if your lazy, you could build it quickly, but give it time with paint, and it'll look awesome!

Enjoy!

This model will be painted to exactly match the box art. I will use white primer, Tamiya's Italian Red, and clear coat for body, and flat black and red for interior.

It certainly does look plated doesn't it?

Well, I just primered the body this morning. It may need another coat of primer later. Will have to wait for it to dry and flip the parts over.

There are still a few more body panels to prime such as the doors and engine lid.

I think this model is going to take a "LOT" longer to build than the 928 was simply cause of the paint work involved. The way it is assembled, makes it difficult. Yet, with all the screws, should be easy as well but I think the paint has to be finished and dried long before. We'll see how it goes.

just by coincidence one of these went by me today on the freeway. i glanced back and saw it coming, it kinda looked like a bulged out japanese wedge nosed rocket but as it got closer it began looking more exotic. it seemed to have a body kit on it too, maybe even like the koenig, just didnt get a long enough look at it. it sounded nice, probably going 65 or so in 2nd gear i would bet, we were in a real congested section of I80, and it was just revved up enough to let you know theres a lot of machinery under the hood. it looks a lot better in motion than standing still i think. never really loved these sort of designs but i have to admit that diablo looked and sounded MEAN!

I have this one.

which I beleive is same body, but yours look's like it might be less complicated to build? Can you post pic's of the kit under a new thread please?

I've seen that box before, but have not found that kit. I'm wondering if that is a simpler version than the one I have.

After getting back from having a birthday lunch with aunt/uncle, I painted her, Diablo, not my aunt, Italian Red.

DSC09334.jpg

I think because of the primer underneath, the red look's a bit flat. Not the shiny gloss red I had previously with the Testarossa. However, I think in the end it will look much better than the molded red plastic which was almost transparent!

Ooo

another cool Koenig on the go. :(

I guess you could say I'm a Koenigolic! Would love to have all available 1/16 1/18 and 1/43 scale models of these wonderful cars!

In 1/43 we now have the Koenig Ferrari 360 which in fact the Modena is my all time favorite Ferrari! Beautiful, sexy lines!

And best part is, they didn't go overboard with the KS 360, just nice mild mods!

This would be a nice one to do by modifying a nice Fujimi 360 Modena kit.

My Koenig Diablo nearly had a brush with death earlier today. My beloved cat loves to be near me when I work on my models and she very delicately walks around our stuff. This time, she accidently knocked my favorite cup off the top shelfe and it nearly hit my Diablo! It bounced off the table, and onto the floor where it shattered.

DSC09341.jpg

Ironically, it was a cup given to me on her behalf. A cup I loved to use for soaking up decal's!

DSC09342.jpg

Anyway, luckily for "HER!", the model was unharmed and I continued to work on it today. I gave the red another coat, and I painted the interior flat black. I also painted the center of the wheels red as they should be.

DSC09340.jpg

Yes the interior was already molded in black, but I didn't want it to look plasticky.

The lighting is what is making the interior parts look a different shade of black. I'm tempted to mask the seats and paint the center flat red. What you think?

Thank you me neither. Still have to paint doors and engine cover. I was looking at those door panels, and thinking of masking it and painting every other "stripe" red along with the center section of the seats. What do you think?

A quick little mock-up for yea!

Some more updates for you KS fan's.

I masked off the seats and door panels.

DSC09347.jpg

I primered the rest of the body panels.

DSC09348.jpg

and I fixed some imperfections in the red paint and gave her another coat.

Installing the front bumper was a huge pain in the rear. I was so nervous about possibly breaking either the bumper, or the entire front end as it's held on by a very week A-pilar and door sills! I hope I don't have to take it off again to finish building the front! EEEEEEEK!

You can see why this model is taking some time!

door panels and seats.

Flat-black'ed the chassis.

DSC09354.jpg

will have to mask off the black and paint the bottom part of the engine as well as the transmission unit. Also, the very edges of the sides need to be painted silver according to the instructions.

wow that is going to look absolutley beautiful. i love the red. your seats are going to look killer.

can't wait to see her all finished up.

good luck

Thank's guys. The body kit fit's well, but the front bumper was a pain in the azz to fit into place. The rear was quite a bit easier.

Once fitted though, it is a perfect fit. I need to give the rear wing another coat, and I'll need to paint the other panels red as well. Once everything is painted, I'll begin assembly.

I'm not sure how I'm going to do the engine bay as 90% of it is black, and only the middle section where the engine itselfe is will be silver. The engine is in an area that wont' be easy to mask, so not sure if it'll be spray-painted, or hand-painted.

The bumpers are held into place by screws, the front bumper is screwed into place with the turn-signal lights. The rear bumper is two peices, the standard Diablo peice, and the additional Koenig rear valance. Both are held onto the body by screws which are nearly impossible to screw into where they are located. I have no idea what they had in mind for a tool that could get into the proper line-up and position for screwing in these screws. Will post pic of that later.

I'll let this dry for a day or two longer before handling it.

Mean while, I'll continue painting other parts.

Sorry the image is a little dark, but here is the engine bay in question.

DSC09356.jpg

The more I examine it, the more complex it look's to mask off neatly. I'd hate to hand-paint it cause I dont' have paint that'll match the silver I'll be spraying other engine bit's.

Hey man, I hear your problem with masking. I've ran into a similar situation recently that you have with your engine bay. I am to understand that many well experienced builders use liquid masking agents to get in those awkward spots. I haven't tried it my self so I can't tell you much about it. What I did with a recent project was I masked the area off the best I could and after spraying I touched up the over sprayed parts by hand with the same color from a bottle. As long as you keep your application as thin as possible, you should get a decent result. Any areas where the touchup contrasts with the spray, try lightly sanding the touchup part with very fine paper to smooth out any stroke lines and blend it in. I wouldn't recommend doing it on any highly visible areas, but something to try if you need it in a pinch.

Thank you for your suggestion. I have used liquid masking once before, but didnt' think about it this time as I dont' have any on hand.

Here are the results so far from simple masking.

Engine bay, not too bad. Probably most of it will be covered by other parts anyway. Still, flat black is very easy to touch up.

DSC09360.jpg

Bottom of chassis where the transmision meets the engine.

I made one error here. The sides of the chassis are actually supposed to be red to match the body. Not a problem, when the rest of it dry's, I can mask and spray.

I hate screws! As simple of a method as mounting something is, I can never seem to get small screws lined up properly especialy when their at odd angles like these seats were.

engine bay with I guess these are air filters?

DSC09364.jpg

This is definetly going to be a slow project!

Some updates, finally had success with the decals, none ripped! Yay!

Also clear coated the flat-black which gives it a nice look. Look's a little more like the black plastic that surrounds alot of engine compartments.

Clear coating over the flat black really gives a nice leathery look I think. It also helps prevent from too much scratching.

Sorry, I don't think I'll have any teaser-shot's for you anytime soon, but you can imagine where this is going! ;)

The flash from the camera takes away the natural sheen of the clear-coated flat-black. But unfortunetly, without the flash, all you see is a black blob with no details.
