rattle can man Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Still trying to trouble shoot an electrical problem on a riding mower. I repaired the broken wire that was shorting out to the block. But now it is blowing the main fuse when it is shut off. Any thoughts? It starts and runs fine, even multiple starts without moving it. But shut it off after mowing and you have to replace the fuse before starting it again. 1
johnyrotten Posted May 15 Posted May 15 (edited) It's blowing the fuse when you shut it off. Most ,not all, ground out the coil. It's referred as the "kill" wire. Mine has a capacitive ignition (cdi) which does the opposite and removes 12v when the key is off. What engine is on the rider? Check for a short in the headlight circuit, as that and the anti backfire solenoid are shared on most ignition switches. Then check the ignition switch for an internal short. rattle can man Posted May 15 Author Posted May 15 Thank you. I believe a Briggs and Straton. It's a JD mower bought from a big box. That headlight tip is worth a shot, since she had a wire repaired before. And the headlights are just a position you need to turn the ignition through to shut down. I'd get rid of it, except the bigger, prograde zero turn scares her.
johnyrotten Posted May 15 Posted May 15 They wire mowers oddly for some reason, and the safety switches, anti-back fire junk just complicates things. Do you recall what wire was originally grounded out?
